No. after getting into computers i quickly realised that internet explorer sucked monkey balls and i went to firefox.

My HTC Tornado phone had IE... The worst wireless speeds, and you couldn't read anything on a 240x320 screen.

The IE memes are gonna be great and go on for a while. Too bad Edge took its place and will get further baked into the OS in the next updates I presume, being IE 2.0 basically.

Only exceeded by Windows 8 RT's huge success in attracting apps. Including no one in MS, outside of the Office & IE teams.

8.1 gets a bad rap from those who used 8 but having gone from 7 straight to 8.1 i think its a good desktop os. the only bad thing is the hot corners and split screen wotsit, sort them and its good ia_100000157.gif

The bad thing about 8.1 is its UI and the introduction of windows apps and store. But its core (performance and features) is even better than 7.

Windows 10 in relation to 8.1 only evolved its UI and very little of its core for desktop users.

Some programs have already removed support for 7 and 8.1 and many have their development focus on recent versions of windows so unfortunately even for old hardware Win10/11 is almost mandatory.

Here's a "real life" example:

With none of our active developers using Windows 7 as their primary OS, the userbase dwindling, and Windows 7 starting to meaningfully fall behind newer versions of Windows, it's going to become more and more likely that features are accidentally broken in Windows 7. Eventually, the differences between Windows 7 and newer versions of Windows may increase to the point where we drop support for the aged OS. We don't plan on purposefully breaking support, but, its days are numbered.

but they are easily sorted.

seemed to be better with memory usage but the UI felt slow n spongy. a recent revisit(march) and an old tweak performs better than it did way back.

true but i have found they are stable on 7 and 8.1. latest w10/11 "only" audacity works fine on 7.

almost. can you strike lucky with sound cards/usb audio devices which is my thing.

In fact the UI is heavier in terms of resource usage but in everything else I feel the OS is more fluid in general usage like copying files, navigating between folders and files in File Explorer, opening programs, etc. With me Win7 has several choking doing the same tasks. But on very old hardware Win7 is unbeatable

If you use a limited number of programs you probably won't have any problems. And even if one doesn't work there are always alternatives that do the same thing. But for the layman in general it's complicated, when something they want to run doesn't work they won't know what to do. Dolphin emulator is an example, it stopped working several times on Win7 and the devs fixed it. It will still work at the moment, unsupported doesn't mean it doesn't work, it just means that if it breaks in the future the devs won't fix it. You can always use older versions that are compatible but at some point they got too outdated and maybe some feature you would like to have won't be there.

The same scenario can repeat itself with some program you need, but I think it should only happen if that program needs features only present in Win10.

im still using xp era stuff that hasnt been updated in years and i dont have to run them in a compatibility mode. not being a gamer helps and audio/video file formats dont change that often :)

Yes, gamers are forced to update more often than usual. But even for those if the hardware is not so new LTSC 2019 is still a good build and lighter than LTSC 2021.
