Shell Experience Host, .exe, think thats it, wipes out start menu too.

Shared Experiences -> Connected Devices Platform. It's a bunch of protocols for syncing user state btw multiple devices (PC, Windows Phone).
Basically nobody uses it. If it broke something, means some background services are annoyed, or it can't talk to the cloud.

Shell Experience Host is a GUI wrapper to UWP apps. Just uninstall all your UWP apps, and you'll be fine
mobsync is one i kill. a f-ton of services, usually later, no lan cable connected.

The settings seems to work, even with the error on the screen, you can move through the settings and set stuff, it is just the error when you click the ‘Display’ section in settings.. anyway, I narrowed down what causes the error, just don’t remove it and no error

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, this is the error I get, 0x40000015 occurred in the application at location 0x00007FFA934BAE22

Excactly - tried on 19044.1381 offline and still give same error after install. When installed and removing "Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel Support" on a live install but keep Windows Error Reporting, then Settings System open with no error? Run preset (over 800 items removed) again on a live install updated from 19044.1320 (ripped with 2.3.0.8396) to 19044.1348 = no error with 2.3.1.8454. Removed 'Shared Experiences' or 'NTVDM' too.
I have a faint recollection that removing Windows Error Reporting in the past also failed, but that Nuhi fixed it there as well. I maintain patience.

In my preset these are Removed, i got no errors about systemsettings generally and especially checked display, no errors on that too....
<c>troubleshootingsvc 'Recommended Troubleshooting service'</c>
<c>errorreportingcpl 'Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel Support'</c>
<c>asimov 'Telemetry Client'</c>

I kept Windows Error Reporting Service, since i wanted kernel debugging working.... So thats the issue... I remember i kept kernel debugging because it has no description thought it may be needed for system... I would want to remove them (kernal debugging, and windows error reporting service) if its safe.

Edit: Tested with also "Kernel Debugging Removed + Windows Error Reporting Service Removed" and settings app also display part is working without any problems. Windows 11 Home x64 Build 22000.346

Hey nuhi, just rn i just stripped 1803, and i did remove "problem reports and solutions control panel " and 1803 is working good, personalize settings working good too. I don't think so if it's this component causing this? U know better ofc
Perhaps the problem only occurs in 1709? In version 21H2 I don't have this problem.

Magnify is also affected if Shared Exp is removed. Displays a Stack-based buffer overrun error.

Do you keep Windows Error Reporting? Haven't tested offline keeping that component alone but take crypticus word for it even i completely remove Diagnostics and Troubleshooting.
No, I remove it. I have been removing Windows Error Reporting for quite some time now and have never had any problems although I remove Diagnostics and Troubleshooting as well. I believe these 2 components are interconnected.

Yes I always remove it and I never had this problem, not even in older builds like 1607 or 1809 but I haven't used them for a while. I believe this is a specific issue in 1709 or other older builds using newer versions of NTLite (some regression perhaps?).

ok.. I have narrowed it down to 'Shared Experiences' or 'NTVDM' under system components.. one more test will give the answer
I removed these 2 and don't get any error in Settings.

You can replicate it by using the 'Lite' Preset on 21H2.
Guys you are using the templates the wrong way. Don't uncheck the options in the Compatibility window using templates!

Try to keep OOBE compatibility checked.

Uh-oh. Same problem as kowcop .

I did a Host Refresh yesterday using the Preset from my currently running Win10 + a few more Manual Removals with NTLite 2.3.2.8526.

SystemSettings was working fine before the Refresh. It's not working after the Refresh. Rats.

Win10 19402.631

nuhi Do you want the Preset? The only thing that I can think of that might cause this is that I removed "Web media extensions" on this wim. (Plus a lot more Xbox stuff.)

Display Setting problem.jpg

I went back thru this thread and saw it suggested that SharedExperience is causing the problem.

Perhaps. But, according to /forcelistcomponents /saveallstates, the SharedExperience component had been removed from my working Win10 before I did a Host Refresh. And I know that Display Settings worked fine there, because I routinely change my Primary Monitor Refresh from 75 Hz to 60.

Okay, I was able to make Display Settings work. BUT, although I was planning to only do a Host Refresh to leave "Web Media Extensions" in, I was forced (by MS) to update 19042.631 to (at least) 19402.685 so that I could keep my Programs and Files during Host Refresh.

So, at least one effect of that is that Edge is now in my system.

(I suppose that I could have Refreshed from 631 to 631 with Replace Nothing, to see if leaving "Web Media Extensions" was the problem. But see point 2, below.)

Nor have I tried to remove Edge to see if Display Settings stops working after it's removed.

Two points here: 1) I'm always hesitant to remove the built-in browser, because sometimes other 3rd party programs depend on a browser being installed. (As opposed to me using a portable version of Waterfox or Palemoon.) 2) I don't get paid to experiment. And while it's usually fun to fix a problem, albeit often exhausting; and always fun to help nuhi, perhaps nuhi might consider a "bug bounty" model, where users who help development can earn some credit toward their next purchase of NTLite. That might motivate me to experiment more.

Anyway, after reading this thread about languages goofing up the Display Setting, I left the Spanish Keyboard out of this Host Refresh. (I was under the mistaken idea that I could set my keyboard to Spanish when I wanted to so I could type in Spanish. But that only really works on a smart phone with a virtual keyboard. (No Ñ on my hard keyboard.) What was I thinking?)

So, for the most part, the changes were: leave Web Media Extensions in. Edge might or might not make a difference. The only keyboard is my native US English. A Cumulative Update, abeit a "minor" one.

I can send the differences in Presets between my first Host Refresh, where Display Settings broke, and my second Present if that will help nuhi to troubleshoot this problem.
