About NTLite activations

I just installed NTLite and the message box said I have zero online activations left. From now on the email only activation is in effect. How does that work? If I need to install it again in the future and I can't activate it online, does someone send me a link in an email to click on or something? And I have a different email address now since I moved 2 years ago. How does all this work?

Contact support at ntlite dot com, it depends on each situation.
In essence, activations are tied to the machine, so OS reinstalls do not require more activations.
It is important to backup either the activation as instructed after each, or the entire tool directory inbetween OS reinstalls.
Either way please contact me over the purchase email, usually it can be reset once in a while if not misused.
Also a license is for your machines only, while you can make images for others, Windows licensing is not influenced.

I actually have been having a similar issue. I have my main PC and a new PC I've been trimming for my grandmother. I wasn't aware of the Host Refresh feature at the time, so I would make a new ISO on my main PC every time I needed to make a change. In doing this, every time I installed NTLite onto the new image of Windows for her, it would take away 1 activation despite me having the folder backed up to a thumb drive. It would tell me that the license had to be reactivated, so now I'm down to 1 online activation I think. Maybe there's a better way to register machine changes?

I just installed NTLite on my computer and I entered in the serial number that I got. I noticed that I do have a license.dat file in my folder. What is that used for? Should I have used that instead of entering in the serial number?

357mag You import license.dat 1st, tool restarts then enter your license key. But, if i remember nuhi s words correctly make sure your settings.xml file is in the folder because it already contains your key(in encrypted form) and the tool will read it.

Okay I just entered in the serial number and pressed the Activate button. In my folder I have the NTLite program, the settings XML file, and then the license.dat file.

I forgot how to do this since it's been many years since I've used the program.

So if I installed NTLite let's say many months down the road from now, would I have to contact support (Nuhi) and tell him I need more activations? If I imported the license.dat file first like I should have followed by the serial number, will it work? Remember the message said I have zero activations left.

If you're importing a valid license.dat, then re-installing on the same system requires no activations. New users tend to make the mistake of burning activations instead of re-importing the old key. I did twice my first year ;)

license.dat must be imported using Settings. A common mistake is copying it to NTLite's folder.
My license.dat file is in my NTLite folder (which is on a second hard drive) along with the Settings xml file and the main program. I don't believe I have ever had a problem with the license.dat file being in that folder. Where are you supposed to keep the license.dat file?

NTLite's folder is where license.dat lives. Make a backup copy.

When it's time to re-install, NTLite creates a new (uninitialized) license.dat. NTLite will ask if you want to run free edition, use an activation code, or load license.dat from another folder. Choose the last option. NTLite has to "bless" the license.dat by updating settings.xml.

Exporting license.dat is the same as copying the one in NTLite's folder.

Home license is not portable, cannot just go to a random machine and activate.
Activate only on your machine(s), one activation is enough - mine never breaks and I do all kinds of things.

There are no infinite activations, in any tool that wants to exist over time.
If you see it not working once on an already activated machine, contact me over email for debugging.

Thanks.

My NTLite folder is on a second internal hard drive which is backed up again on an external hard drive. That is the folder I keep the three files in. I think you are talking about the NTLite folder that resides on your C:\ drive after you install the program.
