Blocking Windows Update

After all what I have done, this morning on switch on I got the store access icon on my desktop.....meaning crap is still coming in. I have reached the end of my knowledge regarding blocking windows update and has reached out for a corruption trick. It's an old trick but it works. Even the Anti-Virus packages has hidden features to allow windows background updates. Soooo. I have corrupted the wuaueng.dll file with it's proxy stub file to not except updates. Added a schedule to replace the dll at intervals in case it gets replaced and blocked the crap out of windows and almost all of the ports, the firewall ports I now have only 80 and 8080. Nearly broke my foot off in windows ass. Now it is starting to purr like the V12 I know and remember. Will see what new curveball I'm gone get after I through this the box of spanners at it. After that.....I'm using the cutting torch to loosen it up.

You should because its a very powerful tool, protable and its free. :) I add it to installs using $OEM$ method. Add any required files to PR UI then add its .ini to PR $OEM$ folder.

Hey......it looks like my plan is failing with the blocking. It seems that if windows is not activated then it is easy to block it but when it gets activated it is trying to unblock itself again. Will work on that one.

Clanger, I cannot pm you......pm me, have a question for you. Thanx

Clanger.....I am starting to use Power Run....nice tool....works much better and much faster that having to look for the reg key, setting permissions, etc.

Great find

I think its safer than changing permissions aswell as easier because you arnt changing anything. Nice to know that ms thinks the guy that built the machine, installed the os and software is a bloody idiot. You can run file managers/search tools from it aswell, 7Zip's file manager and VoidTools Everything search. I still use the Take Ownership reg tweak on occasion. If you want a powerful registry manager you want O&O RegEditor, run from PR, regedit sucks monkey balls by comparison. Mind you, so does most built in ms stuff when compared to 3rd party tools.

it looks like my plan is failing with the blocking.

There is a great update blocker tool and the dev works hard to keep up with ms schenanigans.

One last question......what program can I use to peer into a program or exe ....like you peer into dll files with resources hacker. I know I am pushing it with you......thanx

I wouldnt know what to do or how to use them, like trying to teach a monkey klingon.

Stubborn sob :p I would be very careful posting about "modifying" dll's etc, ms dont always take kindly to sites that post those sort of things.

Hmmm. It makes sense. I don't have a problem with windows updates, I have with the fact that if I change it the way I like it and it is changed the way they want it. I just want to prevent it from being changed back. The updates I will run in NTLite for that matter...some you need...some you don't. I've been looking into using a proxy....but it is like you said....there are some that run beneath the floor which we do not know about.

What I do not understand is that the same OS I was running on this machine is still running one 2 other machines and they are blocked the way that it is not reacting to the net, even with several reboots......this one keeps on giving me this network reaction headache.

With the windows firewall file and the eset firewall, nagging at me, it seems to be silent, but like you said, it will flair up again. I've found with some files if you deliberately screw with them it reduce the net activity drastically.

I will invest more time into your firewall file......see what I am missing, because I am. Thanx for the post and guidance

I implemented SimpleWall....nice program.....but it only blocks about 80% of the stuff.

I have found a solution. It cost money but it works. If you pay the 50 bucks for NetBalancer and adjust it to block incoming and outgoing it works great but you need the paid version to regulate the speed or download ratio. You cannot block everything then the net is off....but you can limit the download and upload of the system and for the net it works great. The system still download and upload but now at a ration of 1bit/h.....that I can live with. So far it is serving it's purpose. It will take months for the system to change....by then I have formatted and reinstalled already.

Have you tried Netlimiter?

Yes Kasual. Tested it....it is not so fresh. Even blocked content still gets passed. Though only a little bit but still. NetBalancer has the advantage of blocking everything of that PiD that is running.....though price is an issue.....I think it is expensive to block the services.......but not as expensive as others

Blocker is off in the screenshot, look at the toolbar.
Some services needs access to the modem/router (IP) to access the internet.

Haven't tried since XP.

Saaglem Try removing the service startup entry only, i did that with cryptographic service because the sob kept being renabled/started. Removed the entry and its gone from services. Or remove the whole damn service and its values.

Can a service run if you delete all the service entries?
What other services are needed by windows update?
