Does disabling Windows Update break the Microsoft Store?

Microsoft Store can download and install apps outside of WU. By default, WU will update any installed Store apps in the background.
This feature can be disabled by using a reg setting.

If background updates are disabled (or WU is turned off), you will have to run the Store App to refresh installed apps.

I have completely removed windows update and store still works and successfully downloads/installs. However be careful because there is a lot of services and stuff that needs to work to ensure proper operations.
 
Base Filtering Engine is also required, store will run but not complete downloads if disabled or removed.
