GamerOS Windows 10 & 11 DIY Preset

I believe that the entire infrastructure for running UWP apps (including Settings, start menu, etc) consumes a lot of resources. Anyone with a slow hard disk can barely use Windows 10 decently. Even a context menu takes ages to open. Win8.1 does the same thing as Win10 using much less resources.

UWP is a virtualization environment now. Under W8, it was just Metro UI and new libraries. Ever wonder why UWP hides the actual registry keys and does the whole hidden files/permissions/registration thing? Virtualization. That costs a lot of overhead.

Because app devs suck at security, the Windows folks are going to sandbox everything in virtual containers.

8.1 EI Pro is about 12000 handles default.

Thanks for the more technical explanation, didn't know about the virtualization thing.

Hello, just read this whole thread, before trying GamerOS 10 Minimal.xml, is network discovery and file sharing in the presets? If not I assume I have to turn those features on in services and add back file sharing. Any other component I need?

Restore SMB (skip v1 unless you have legacy clients).
Or Backup and Restore (Legacy) is not working for your image (in this case you only need SMB1 Client though). "Workstation" service is a fallback service for something in there, not sure what or why.

I just installed Windows 10 using minimal settings, but when I try open file location, I cant. Can I add a missing feature to get this to work or do I spin up another build and reinstall? And what would I include to get this to work?

Microsoft - "Well, you have much more powerful cpu's and bigger faster storage so whats the problem?"
Clanger - "Need an sooper-pooter just to run the bloody operating system, put XP w7 and LTSC 1809 Task Manager screen grabs side by side to see the problem."
Microsoft - puts fingers in ears and goes "la la la la la".
Clanger - "the prosecution rests m'lord".
