Hi
Can anyone point me, a noob in the right direction how to install .net 4.8 into my W7 Sp1 Ultimate x64 this pre req is needed for NordVPN
Post install does work but takes a long time as noted in a post somewhere on the forum, BUT to make sure as curiosity got the better I had to try and test :)
Today I came across GImageX - GUI, would this be recommended to try and learn?

Thanks
Smokes

gimagex is worth learning(its easy) if you want to capture an image.
here is a partial update list for win 7(eol), this lot installs 3125574, net 4.8 and ie11(because someone may find it useful).

kb3125574 - some of these may have been superceeded but this combination works.
01-2016-07-27-Windows6.1-KB3177467-x64-SS.msu
02-2016-04-25-Windows6.1-KB3125574-v4-x64-SP2.msu
03-2016-03-29-Windows6.1-KB3145739-x64.msu
04-2016-04-10-Windows6.1-KB3153199-x64.msu
================================
net 4.8
ndp48-x86-x64-allos-enu.exe
===================
ie11
2012-09-windows6.1-kb2729094-v2-x64.msu
2013-02-windows6.1-kb2670838-x64.msu
2013-07-windows6.1-kb2834140-v2-x64.msu
IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe
ie11 optional
2011-11-windows6.1-kb2639308-x64.msu
2016-09-ie11-windows6.1-kb3185319-x64.msu
====================================

if you want to build a w7 eol image, here is what i would do. install 7 and the updates above, add language packs as needed aswell as any c++ packs, add other updates, sysprep and capture with gimagex. do not add any tweaks or any removals, that way you will have an image with all default settings, you can customise later. when you want to deploy that image then customise as you require, ntlite works well with a captured image and cleans it out nicely.

Hello Clanger
Thanks very much for your time. I am trying on 64bit windows found all other files can only find wimmountadksetupx86.exe is there a 64bit version of this file?

Using GImageX v2.2.0
wimgapi.dll
wimmount.sys
wimprovider.dll
wimserv.exe

also present in folder gimigex.exe but no imagex.exe

i ran gimagex on a w7 ult sp1 image, these are the settings to use. for the Source, browse to the drive you want to capture. create the Destination and Temp Folders. leave wimscript.ini blank.

its pretty easy to use and the help chm file is easy to understand. if you get stuck post :)

Smokes once you have prepared your install ready for capture, run sysrep and use the settings below. ive only ever done it manually with the same settings with no problems. yeah that old 128gb(i use 120gb crucial bx500s for testing) ssd will be sufficient providing its in good order, check it 1st though.

Thanks to you both for the help I will be forever be in your debt :) I best not type too much, I have already caused enough commotion. :oops: There's always next week though HA!

Just when I thought I was getting somewhere, I have .wim file from VMWare when I try to open in NTLite message isolated warning popped up. The file is loaded. Maybe it's the way I captured, it took a long time to copy to my spare SSD. A look around the net has not helped if anything made it worse, Coffee anyone?

I'm well out of my depth with all of this :) still it was worth a try.
Just read your joke at bottom of your page, :) funny!

Hmm... I haven't been following along. The other day I was "forced" to install 4.7.2 to run QuickCPU on Win7. (Core Parking.) (That app only needs 4.6, but I figured - perhaps incorrectly considering it's MS that we're talking about - that later was better.)

I noticed that it took about 2-3 minutes for the installer to complete. It hung at about 2/3 of the way thru. But it eventually finished.

Is the offline install for 4.8 really that much worse?

pmikep 4.8(above) is fine, dont take that long if i remember correctly, i aint got no beef with it, i would remember if i had. even if it had taken a while its a necessary evil. had a feeling quickcpu might insist on 4.6 but it runs on 4.8(win 7).

Can you send a screenshot of the warning? Can't you unload?

The capture takes time because Windows 7 with all updates has many superseded files and with that the image size is very large. With NTLite you can remove these useless files with the Clean update backup option but this is a paid feature. There is a free utility called rebase that does the same function but NTLite is able to reduce the image further.

The installation time depends a lot on the power of your CPU. On slow machines it can take almost an eternity.

With repack the installation time is significantly reduced and this also eliminates the files superseded by the updates and the backup of the setup.

I personally prefer to install the repack in audit mode than integrate offline for me it seems closer to the official installer and I've had problems with the addon. I would also prefer to install Directx in audit mode than integrate offline to avoid errors.

ive seen captures at 14 to 15gb but that goes down to just over 7gb(with net 4.8 and ie11) once you put it into ntlite just for a cleanup, no component removals, just cache and temp files, nets setups and cleanups, update cleanup.
so what it takes time(not that long from ssd), kettle on and a wee break.

on 8.1 and 10 you could do a dism clean before hand but that takes a really long time so if you're going to nuhi the image you might aswell let that do the cleanups and go grab some food.

Smokes yes, that all looks correct. wim files are usually within an extracted image, when you load a wim file outside of the usual extracted image folder ntlite will warn you that its Isolated so any removals to any file/folder outside of the usual dvd file and folder layout wont be availible to you. the sizes are what i expected and stated earlier and will shrink during a cleaning process, no removals, just a clean.

here is a basic clean only preset, no removals, just a clean.

Thanks for help Clanger, will probably be back in a day or 2 :) Once basic clean has been done would it be just a case of extracting a Win 7 iso and put new wim in or more complicated?
Off topic question but may coincide with the above. If I wanted to boot a windows 7 iso/dvd to efi non secure GPT what would I need to do? I know there is Rufus, AIO-Boot and Easy2Boot. I am curious as to how it could be done just using the iso, maybe something with a. Win 10 boot wim? This is all new to me, would be good if I learned a thing or two with this..
