NTLite - Removing Windows Update Feature (1909 Build)

Hi,

I need advice in regards to removing Windows Update Feature. As we know, Windows 10 updates itself how it pleases even when registry and Group Policy settings are in place. I'm in the favour of removing Windows Update Feature so that Windows 10 doesn't install any updates whatsoever.

So, here are few questions:

1) Does removing Windows Update feature brakes anything in the 1909 build ?
2) After I remove Windows Update feature and integrate some updates into the ISO using NTLite, would they install ?
3) After I remove Windows Update Feature, is there any way to only install cumulative updates manually by using MSU package ?
4) Does cumulative updates reset settings like the Build updates that are 2+ GB in size ?
5) Is there any other component that can be removed so that I only receive security updates and Feature Updates are eliminated/not active to install ?

I know this is a lot of questions but I'm new to customizing Windows 10 and I will really appreciate if someone could answer the above questions.

Thanks,
Oliver

1) Other than updating, automatic or manual (MSU/CAB support being gone), not expecting any issues.

2) Sure.

3) To update without it, check out the Host Refresh method. If this method becomes too slow for you, or you want to go back to automatic, simply keep Windows Update on the next refresh and it will be back.

4) They shouldn't. On the other hand the Host Refresh method may skip some settings, depends if Microsoft made it "migrate" correctly.
I wasn't bothered by it, but did get report from a few users with more obscure settings.

5) If you remove WU, see #1 and #3, only way to update - other than reinstall, regardless if it's a security only or cumulative.
Only Windows 7 and 8 have those split btw.

Is Host Refresh method available in "Free" version of NTLite ?

Microsoft have thought about everything, did they. I wonder if it would be possible to port it back from Windows 7 or Windows 8 into Windows 10 just for the MSU install support.

On the side as I do not really want to create another thread, are there any side effects of removing a Home Group ?

Thanks,
Oliver

No. Home Group is simply a set of wizards to make group file sharing easy, but you can use network shares (SMB) the old fashioned way.

What does Home Group really do? It allows a group of local machines to trust each other, using a shared HomeGroup credential instead of exchanging private passwords. Everything else you can do by hand (sharing folders and printers).
