NTLite wont do Host Refresh installs anymore

Version of NTLite is 1.8.0.6976 64-Bit

I depend on NTLite to let me do host refresh updates after I integrate the most current windows updates into my 1809 windows 10 iso I downloaded from the techbench website (which has been working perfectly so far). Now lately that functionality has been halted

I integrate the updates and apply the settings, then I go host refresh and load my preset I meticulously maintain to ensure perfect compatibility/no-breakage; I had to reinstall my OS after I messed up big time, so I used a modified windows 10 pro v1809 iso with all my changes, and that worked (fresh install only), but even before/after that, everytime I try doing a host refresh or even a repair install with the modified iso, the changes ALWAYS fail and it gives me the following error: 0xC1900101 - 0x30018, something something first boot failed at SYSPREP, and this also breaks all troubleshooters I use, including the one that hides windows updates. The ONLY one that worked is using NTLite to integrate all the 1809 updates into my windows 10 pro extracted iso folder, then make an iso file and use rufus to burn it to USB (because im burning through Blu-Ray discs), then I ran a "repair install" and it worked fine. Essentially forcing me to use a fully unmodified and updated version of windows 10 pro

I am updating ntlite and plan to do a live edit to apply all my changes once more, but there has to be something in NTLite that is messing up editing the win10 img perfectly. ill upload my preset for testing, but I really dont want to have to backup all my programs/documents/videos/music/pictures/all my entertainment stuff and have to do a fresh install of an NTLite modified windows 10 pro just to have all the stuff I dont want on it gone

TL;DR stuff is broke, please help

Hi,

will check your preset, and reply back today.

Btw the troubleshooters are fixed in next, see here.

Always use latest version, if your host's upgradability (host refresh compatibility) is broken then a reinstall is needed, only thing that can be tested and fixed is the ISO.

Used your preset with 1809.529 ISO, installed it via Host Refresh to 1809.1, then used that same installation to Host Refresh with the same ISO.
That way both host and ISO modifications are tested for compatibility.
Worked fine with the latest pre-release version, will send it to you over PM just in case, don't want to retest with the public version.

If you see any issues with it, then it might be that some antivirus or another installed app is blocking it, plenty of internet results for the exact error you specified. I would need some logs if this version doesn't solve it.

Let me know how it goes, contact me at first sign of trouble, in the future don't hold out for so long.

Thanks.

im downloading the program you sent in the PM, and ill test it out by the next windows CU update, got other stuff to do for now

Btw I just had a similar issue with one of the computers, and since it was made by an old NTLite version it had a bug in Remote Desktop Server removal, so just repeated the removal for that one component with a newer version and then latest ISO installed via Host Refresh.

If you get any issues, I can check the logs and recommend similar if it's about re-removal and Host Refresh compatibility was left enabled, needed components never removed.

I am so sorry its taken me this long to reply, been caught up with house work, yard work, trying to find a job in this god forsaken town work, but I used the beta ntlite you sent, used the same preset I used last time, and at the time of this post, it failed, giving me the EXACT same failed boot sysprep error like last time

I do not know if this error log is what you need, but if you need anything else, im willing to provide it; I was able to do these host refresh installs even with mcafee installed in the past, but now I cant? seem to me microsoft must've changed something in their iso files preventing anything other than simple update integration via ntlite

Thanks, but have you reinstalled at all, because it can be due to the host issues, while the image is fine?
To see what's I'm aiming at, install an image configured with your preset in some virtual machine.
Then run the same setup.exe from that image to refresh that virtual machine, it should work, demonstrating that either there was a bug earlier in your host install, or you installed or changed something that is a normal Windows bug.

Btw I suggest switching to 1903 and integrating the KB4511712 into the image, it's Windows migration fixes.
And get yourself files from KB4505902, and extract them over the image .\Source folder overwriting any files, that's the second part of the upgrade fixes.
Maybe those alone will fix it, but I doubt it, I suggest you reinstall the host if the virtual machine test passes.

The following tests and VM's made were all done in the virtualbox program with its network adapter turned off

so I re-extracted the files from the base 1809 iso I got, integrated the updates, and made an image file (win10a.iso), then I used my preset I sent earlier, and made another image file out of it (win10b.iso). I did 2 virtual machines, one which I used the win10a file, and one with the win10b file. with the win10a machine, I used the win10b iso file I made to do a host refresh, and see what changed, and the applications, and stuff I marked for removal in the preset were removed, and the following image showed me this

seef.png

I can take from this, that the programs like groove music, your phone, and the others were removed but their menu entries were not, that is easily fixable for me. For the 2nd virtual machine with the win10b iso file, I installed it once, and did it again doing a host refresh/repair install, and it worked as well, nothing was changed past what the preset already did

So I don't know what could be doing this, maybe it was mcafee after all, but one time I tried this without mcafee and it gave me the same thing; maybe its windows defender or something else I forgot to mark in the preset? at this point, I got no idea; im willing to do a host refresh/upgrade install to 1903, but downloading the base iso from the techbench website I use will take a bit of time on my internet connection

But you tell me to take the files from the KB4505902 update, extract them, and copy them over the files in the 1903 sources folder, but wont integrating that update into the 1903 image file be the same as doing a manual copying?

I'm not sure how that was conveyed, never copy files manually, always update/integrate through the Updates page.

Let me know if you find any issues in the future, this all got mixed up in my head, and yes Host Refresh is not perfect when you do this:
- install lite
- refresh to full
- refresh to lite

Then those shortcuts from Full might remain as you noted.
In that case, refresh to full update via Windows Update or NTLite - Source - Tools - Install Updates - Add Latest, and remove components from C:\Windows directly, instead of host refresh.

sorry again with the long wait and posting

did all of that, integrated the updates, update installed to 1903, then used my preset to remove the components in question, so far, no mess ups, but I do have a macrium reflect backup of my 1809 setup in-case it does mess up big time
