Thank you Clanger for your presets!

Would you mind providing 3-5 word comments on any of these releases you have included (1607 1709 1803) for Win10? I'm new, using win10pro x64 1703 (cuz it's been behaving ok) and need to decide which of your presets to play with first. Maybe i'll try all 3. I don't care how big the install is, but i like less ms (no apps, no cortana/search/edge/start menu etc), less web exposure, less services crap asking Windows Firewall Control for a bathroom pass. This is for home use, no server, no local streaming etc. Media production workstation.

I searched but don't see anyone explaining much about preferred rel. versions. I've read in various posts/threads of yours that you don't use win10 so maybe yr comments would be like this:

'1607 - most stable (reported issues), less bloat, works better on old hardware' or etc. That would still be helpful.

Windows 10 Build 1607 LTSB edition is the preferred edition among geeks because it doesnt get feature(eye candy) updates every 6 months but it still gets regular updates, bug and security fixes so its basic configuration is stable just as w7 and 8.1 are. The problem is it isnt availible to home users ;).

Trouble is many like the store and apps, need to keep cortana etc because removing it may break stuff they need so i write a lite preset as a starting point which they can modify further.

Media production workstation means you need a stable operating system so you can get stuff done. Use 1703 because it is stable enough for you, tweak with a lite preset and use that while you can test other build numbers and editions.

I cant give thoughts and notes on an os/editions i dont use but i can recommend w7 and 8.1 for media/music production and home audio freaks because i am a home audio freak. If you can have an offline media pc then you can disable lots of windows services if you use basic programs like REAPER(great for waveform editing and rendering to mp3 and wav) and Audacity(with LAME and FFMPEG libraries) and Handbrake(requires .nets). If you use pro or semi pro programs then you may need active internet for activations/copy protection. REAPER and Audacity(neither require .nets) work great on w7 pro 64bit that has been bareboned down to 1.12gb installed or a lite install that has a barebone services configuration. If you can try 7 and 8.1 instead of 10.

Aswell as removals there are tons of tweaks that will make a very well behaved system.

ButWait Your preset is in the 1703 folder in the new pack. IT will reduce an untouched iso by around 2gb, pagefile and hibernation have been disabled as they are space hogs. You will need to keep any required languages keyboards and fonts to suit those requirements. All 3rd party(non microsoft) drivers have been removed unless they are needed for a default compatibility option.

All my presets are based on a common base configuration and and i then modify them because fonts languages keyboards and drivers do/may vary between different OS's type and build numbers(for windows 10). I have kept store and apps, xbox and other stuff because many people like them things and removing them can break stuff so what i do is find an easy 2gb(give or take a few MB) of removals to start beginners off because suprisingly people ignore those things when they are the easiest to remove. Remove the apps and a few things like xbox and you will gain another 1gb ish and thats before you touch any major system components, 3gb of easy removals.

My own preference is the same as my old nliting xp days, lite removals and tweaked like hell. Ive donne your preset and one for 1809 so i can go offline and get my 8.1 stuff done. Any questions and im sure the guys will help you.

Clanger - 'my' preset!? vaya majo! That is so much more than i asked, thank you. I hope that didn't take you long. Yeah, I thought I'd narrowed in on your non-LTSB presets. My intro to 8 and 8.1 has been helping a friend setup one embedded with a Lenovo AIO p.o.s and i hate it, felt like the whole OS was a metro app gadget. but haven't ever tried to make one mine, so to speak. You'd be referring to how it behaves once separated from its horrid shell (no pun intended). I recently leapfroggied to 10 from an xp old ich7 maintained via slipstreams n addon packs from the good crows at RvM forums. Not that i'm a power user. Was looking into win7, which might be fine on recent hardware, but whatever, here i am on win10.

[To anyone] When you say 'kept store and apps, xbox and other stuff because many people like them things and removing them can break stuff ' -do you mean xbox (which i don't need) and Store removal breaks those things that so many like? Or that it destables the wider system so that even if i don't want xbox, store, apps, search, cortana, edge...it's safer to keep them and just disable like i do anyway?

THing with store apps blah blah blah is people like them and i cant please everyone so i keep them. Removing things will/may/could affect other things, users need to test things out to suit their requirements.

I switched to Lite presets because beginners were coming in and asking where to start and there were no presets availible to cater for them. Experienced liters and power users know their stuff already but we all gotta start somewhere right? :) You came in and said 1703 was working ok and there wasnt a preset so i sorted that out and because i was in the right mood i was able to put one together for 1809 too.

It takes longer to download an iso than what it does to modify them for a new build, extract an iso, load it, load another iso for comparison, modify removals, cross check things then save the image only takes around 30 minutes.

Here you are. Addons are additional components like store apps, xbox, smart cards and point of sale(pos, hahaha).
Combined is the addons and v1 lite in 1 file to make liffe easier for you.

Combined both presets will give you 4290MB installed on an untouched and not updated iso.
A big CU will usually be around 1gb larger than an untouched iso so take that into account then an updated iso using both presets should give you around 5290MB installed size. 3.5gb worth of removals and because i havnt even touched major system components there shouldnt be hardly anything that breaks. and i didnt even break a sweat

-uy idk what to say! You are the Beelzebub's knees! i certainly wasn't intending to elicit more goodies from you, and sorry you had to repeat your explanations; i tend to come off as slightly more dense than i might be . Hopefully, if useful to you, I can offer feedback on how my system digests your evil candy. - may the devils of junk percussion bathe you in sound

sorry if i confused or offended you, i was just riffing opaquishly [your generous goodies..candy..beelzebub...evil candy]. And I probably shouldn't do that on any online forum. (interaction online still hasn't sunk in for me -the costume ball aspect, especially. still blows my mind. )

I had a feeling my reply was a little cryptic and many people wont get it, only those who have seen Young Frankenstein.

Blücher
mwahahaha :D

Not me, if the phrase "evil candy?" was in that movie, I'm long past remembering. But the me of way back when..really liked that film.

NTLite 180.6593 beta x64 and Win10Pro x64:
1. Should I start a new thread about this? -----So, in using one of your CLANGER-W10Pro.x64.1607-Lite-v3 (and thank you again), after loading a untouched 1607 dvd folder (unzipped iso), it seems at least some of the changes were made to my live OS instead of said 1607 folder. Among other things, there were 19GB of temp files left over after NTLite processed the preset on the selected folder, my OS experienced minor behavioural changes, and has 99 temp files from BitLocker -eg AppData\Local\Temp\NLTmpMount01\Windows\BitLockerDiscoveryVolumeContents. Again, I work on clones so not too worried about my live OS, but about how i could have screwed up so badly in my use of NTLite.

2. Anyone happen to know: Is it normal that ISASS frequently asks for WFC TCP outbound permission upon NTLite launch? (new thread?)

Also, Clanger, I'm sorry I didn't have my act together, before you volunteered the 1703 presets, to consider telling you that 1703 was not the release version of my install dvd, which turns out to have been 1607-1493.0 - i'm worried that means i wasted your time on your 1703 help.

Thanks. But no, I was conscious of not doing that. Loading the folder gave me 3 options to load: Win10Pro, Win10 Home, and Boot. I had Win10Pro option loaded when i ran the preset. Before selecting and applying the Clanger preset, I even went and removed any autosaved and other Live-related presets from the install folder, then refreshed, to be sure there wouldn't be some unexpected interactions among presets.

So, no worries. I'll assume that yr response means it is anomalous, which means I should just try again and report back if the problem repeats.

yes, i'll use that..and if probs occcur i'll try non-beta. FYI, since this was my first run (discounting trying this and that on live disks), I had done nothing to my project folder prior to running this preset: created iso on two diff progs, confirmed both had same hash value, unzipped one of em to a folder, ran NTLite, added said folder, loaded the Win10Pro option, dbl clicked the preset, applied it.

another noob question: do these presets include compatibility settings, so one does not need to go and unlock stuff that the preset wants to change? I looked and it seemed the activated preset had already adjusted the compatibility options, so i did nothing there either.

If you read my earlier posts it didnt take long to compile the 1703 preset, i didnt have a 1703 one before and now we have and someone somewhere may want one, my time wasnt wasted :).

I keep the default Compatibility Options because presets are for beginners and i chose my component removals carefully. :)

OK, thanks Clanger!

One thing I want to rule out before assuming I accidentally applied the preset to Live OS: is it a mistake when exporting a hardware list to save it in the "HWLists" folder of the install folder?
