Goals;

Working Windows Defender/Firewall/Action & Security Center

Disabled Updates.

Cortana for Windows searches (Only) - No internet Access

No Tracking/Bloatware.

Windows 10 Start Menu/Themes
Calculator/Paint/Notepad &/or Wordpad.

Portable Foobar (Music)
Firefox (Browser)
OpenOffice (Office Stuff)
VLC media Player (Video)

The idea is to keep the look and general accessibility (Settings/Menus) of Windows 10, with no other crap in the background.

Use Everything by voidtools instead of cortana, it leaves it in the dust. Use asio4all with foobar and dont forget the foo-asio plugin. MS are playing sneaky with windows updates, use the Windows Update Minitool Wrapper Script to control WU. Use the OpenOffice portable from portableappsdotcom.

honestly i don't use searching enough to warrant a dedicated program, it's just handy when i can type in the settings thats all or down next to the start menu.

ASIO4All? never heard of it, whats it for? as foobar works fine on it's own.

Windows Updates i don't bother with, i'd rather save myself the trouble and update when the next ISO is released. It's remained disabled, and my firewall settings will prevent it connecting anyway. I've only kept it on due to possible compatibitility issues later on.

Windows treats audio as any process, it puts it in the queue for processing, ASIO forces the os to treat audio as priority, used in most studios and i always recommended for home users. asio4ll is just a free asio driver. MS are getting sneaky and getting WU to start when users disable it.

16 installs later and i think i've found my setup! Which isn't really all that different. Speaking of Everything i had some problems with my SSD, files i deleted, reappearing, ever since i tried deleting an old Windows Apps folder.. and after another unsuccessful attempt with the M$ store it got worse, where folders & files disappeared.

After a quick google search a person recommended Void Tools - Everything, so since you mentioned it i gave it a whirl... got my files back and then some, deleted everything in the list that was obsolete and now it's working fine again.

I will check out that ASIO4All!

Anyway, my install;

Windows 10 Pro x64bit.

I untick the "Drivers" category, removing all unneeded drivers. I then deselect "Host Machine" from the "Compatibility Tab", and then under "Drivers", untick "Network Adapters" & "Sound, Video And Game Controllers", as i download the latest ones and install them from another drive.

Following that i then untick every other category of components (Except ISO Image) so that only those tied to the compatibility options above are selected.

I then re-tick the following;

Firewall > Comodo Firewall (Windows Firewall adds 20ms Client side on Battlefield 1)
Music > Portable Foobar
Photoviewer > Portable ImageGlass
Search > Portable Voidtools - Everything

Windows Update will need to be re-Enabled for Windows to Activate, and can then be safely disabled again.

16 installs is about right when fine tuning liting. Dont forget to set Comodo to their own dns servers. I never used windows 7 own search much, i used xp's a lot more. Now i use Everything all the time, i dont bother with tons of shortcuts anymore, especially with portables, it finds my stuff dead quick.

Glad your sorted and happy. :)

I recommend a custom ruleset for Comodo.

Add Svchost.exe and set up a custom ruleset for it;

1:
Action - Allow
Protocol - UDP
Direction - Out
Source Address - Any
Destination Address > Your Default gateway (ipconfig it).
Source Port - Any
Destination Port > 53

2:
Action - Allow
Protocol - UDP
Direction - Out
Source Address - Any
Destination Address > Any
Source Port - 68
Destination Port > 67

3:
Action - Block
Protocol - IP
Direction - In Or Out
Source Address - Any
Destination Address > Any
IP Details - Any

Then manually allow each application you want to have access as you go.

Actually i use OpenDNS, they have never failed me, though my alternatives are the new 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1. But all that is set in my router.

It's light & nippy, i have the control i want. figured i'd post my process incase someone else wanted to try. But it's a light build that may not work for many.

On my 15th i had the Xbox app work fine, and M$ store, though i had trouble downloading a game, which was M$'s fault, and decided to do away with the XBox stuff altogether.

But yeah if anyone has any knowledge of certain programs needing certain services, could create a post on it, like the one for Windows 7

Right now the only one i know of is the;

"Windows Presentation Foundation (Core)" for Razer Synapse.
&
"Group Policy Client" i needed to edit the firewall settings.

Luckily i still have zone alarm free firewall offline installers, i found it easier to configure than comodo but i may go back to comodo. Nice tip, thankls :) Yeah, i am thinking about dns servers and 1111 etc once i work down my toodoo list.

Yeah OpenDNS blocks any malcious sites in their database, and you can setup parental controls if need be.

It's a shame Comodo's free firewall doesn't have an offline installer, but while that's installing i run any other installer so i don't have to deal with each one being blocked by my Comodo settings later on, i get the installers done with it, get Windows Activated, and then import my custom ruleset profile and voila i'm done.

I also run O&O ShutUp10, just incase.

I have got an older comodo offline installer. Zone Alarm got very, ermm, you could offline install ZAFF without being connected and you were protected from the start but when they forced you to use bootstrappers i think a lot of people ditched it, i had many zaff online installers fail.
