Unable to change default programs bug in 1.7.0.6522 & 1.7.0.6510

Hey nuhi,

I tried the release you made today (1.7.0.6522) and still ran into the same issue with being unable to change the default applications as I mentioned here.

I know you said you had problems replicating the error, but I was able to replicate it myself on separate hardware. These were the steps I followed:

1: Use Win10_1803_English_x64.iso (you can get this by using a non-MS computer or a non-MS user agent to access the Windows 10 download website. You also need to select "English" and "x64" options for the ISO)

2: Apply the included preset to the ISO

3: Burn the ISO using Rufus, and install

The resulting installation will have the same errors I documented previously.

Here is a copy of my post from September 13th:

---

Default program configuration is broken. For example, I want to set my web browser to Firefox. The default web browser after installation is "IE ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library".

index.php

When I click on it (to change it), a popup window asks me to choose an app, but the only option is, again, the "IE ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library".

index.php

I also tried clicking "Set defaults by app", then clicking on Firefox > Manage, and I still couldn't set Firefox to be the default program for URL:HTTP or URL:HTTPS

index.php

I also tried opening hyperlinks from the settings app, to see if I could select a default program that way. Although a popup window appeared which asked me to choose a program to open the hyperlink, I again only had one choice.

index.php

I also tried running

control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageDefaultProgram

and

control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc

to try to open the default programs menu from the control panel, but it would immediately redirect me to the settings app instead.

Same like in your other topic, I cannot replicate, to me Firefox and "Default Host Application" are listed in the Settings - Apps - Default apps - Web browser after using your preset..

We need to figure out what is different on your side, you can reply only on that other topic regarding that, the start menu issue is more urgent if it's the tool's fault.

Thanks.

I stumbled upon the same thing.

Windows 10 1803 latest cumulative patches integrated.

Firefox does not stick as default browser, stays on IE ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library.
I'll try some stuff myself, if i fix it ill post the new profile so you can compare nuhi.

And this config fixes it. Someone do a diff on them and check the difference :)

Update: seems i forgot the whole network section on removal of components, ill do another optimized pass for myself and see if this particular browser default problem appears again, or remains fixed.

Improved personal version for myself, everything works fine, no event viewer errors, firefox no issues as default browser.

Hope it helps y'all.

I also ran into the same thing on Win 10 1803. I'm unable to set .ps1 files to default open with powershell_ise.exe instead of notepad. For me, this occurs after I simply update an 1803 wim with latest updates using NTLite, create an auto-filled Unattended setup, create an iso and test in a VM (VMware VM machine support selected). If I do the same process but without updates, setting default app works fine.

Thanks guys, will give it a shot, the updating part might be the trick to replicate it.

In both this bug and my start menu editing bug, I included all recent updates AND the .net 3.5 template.

That might also help with replicating the issue.

Hey nuhi

I found something that might be helpful... I tried running NTLite on the newest Windows 10 1809 release, and I was still able to replicate the error (again I used Windows 10 Professional Education, downloaded with my earlier method)

However, I noticed this issue only affects the web browser. No other programs seem to be affected. In the screenshots below, you can see that I have many options to choose from when choosing a photo viewer, but when choosing a web browser I only have the IE ActiveX Interface Marshalling Library.

I hope this helps! :)

NoTRite, thx.
Then it must be the InternetExplorer 64-bit part removal.
Haven't replicated yet, as MT_'s preset broke the OOBE part of the installation last I tried this.
Will redo it by adding at least one user.

MT_, btw you have a duplicate cumulative update in your preset, only the latest is enough, it contains all previous.
I'm guessing you removed the local user from the preset for privacy, or how do you create the user on that preset?

Thanks.

A duplicate? I usually grab the latest 'Regular' and 'Security' cumulative update from Microsoft update catalog if thats what you mean?

Unless I made a mistake, I'm human after all :)

KB4458469, September 26, 2018 (OS Build 17134.320)
is enough, no need for:
KB4457128, September 11, 2018 (OS Build 17134.285)

Just to make it clear, this would not cause this issue, I'm still investigating, just saving you space and time :)

But the first one is classified as 'update' and the latter as 'Security update'

Why would MS screw up classification naming?

I mean, there must be regular OS fixes AND security updates for a specific Windows build, are you saying both regular and security updates are within a single cumulative update combined?

Im slightly confused :D

edit: Nvm, Microsoft classification is weird as hell. Apparently both regular and security bug fixes are included. Still weird how catalog shows one as 'updates' and the other as 'security updates' class.

Thx for pointing it out nuhi, integrating updates takes by far the longest. even on 5GHZ cpu and a 970 EVO :p

-.-

Yeah, Catalog seems like an afterthought by its obsolete design and inconsistent naming. At least it doesn't require IE any more, jeez :)

They had a bug with KB4458469, September 20, 2018 (OS Build 17134.319).
So they quickly next week, out of the usual order, released KB4458469, September 26, 2018 (OS Build 17134.320), and probably wanted it to be more highlighted by calling it a security update, as the difference/delta update from one to the other is that.
It's just when we download full updates, only latest is enough.
