Unable to edit start menu bug in 1.7.0.6522

Hey nuhi,

I tried using 1.7.0.6522 to install to a new computer, and I noticed the start menu will not save any changes I make to it...

First, when I open the Settings App and make changes to the start menu, such as unchecking "show app list", there is no effect on the start menu.

Second, when I reopen the Settings App, the setting I just unchecked becomes checked again.

Third, I can add tiles to the start menu, and drag them as normal. But, after I log out/log back in, restart explorer.exe, or restart the computer, the start menu goes back to the default configuration it had when I first installed windows.

To replicate, download Win10_1803_English_x64.iso from the Microsoft website, using a non-windows user agent or non-windows machine.

Second, apply the included preset.

Third, burn the ISO to a USB drive and install.

Bump

There isn't anything really to show in screenshots except the default start menu, since no error messages show up

Thanks for the report.

Tried this in a way to edit the "Education" edition with your preset, and after install pinned "Voice Recorder", rebooted, pin still there on the start menu.

Do you do anything else that could explain our difference, including REGs or scripts, and how did you get or made the "ProfessionalEducation" edition?

I don't add any registry files or scripts, but I do add all updates and .NET 3.5 to the ISO using NTLite.

When I download the ISO using the method above from the MS website, "Professional Education" is one of the options in NTLite.

Would it help if I sent you the ISO I made that has the bug?

Thanks. Will download the exact original image and hope for the worst :)
Adding this back to the drawing board.

Hey nuhi

This issue resolved itself when I applied the same presets to 1809 instead of 1803, so something in the upgrade to 1809 fixed it! So don't worry about it I guess :p

Hi,

that's good news.
In the meantime I did get the ProfessionalEducation and similar editions.
One more puzzle bit with your preset, the part:
<Package>C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9\Sources\Sxs\microsoft-windows-netfx3-ondemand-package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab</Package>
<Package>C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9\Sources\Sxs\Microsoft-Windows-NetFx3-OnDemand-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~.cab</Package>

If my Google-fu is not mistaken, "CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9" is 1709?
So are you integrating 1709 .NET into the 1803 image?
If so, please don't, even if it works. Always use the accompanying CABs from the source image.
You can remove those after loading the preset and just on the Updates page go Add - Templates - .NET and it will pull those from the proper location.
Then resave the preset to avoid this potential issue.

I'll use 1803 as the testing ground for it, at least the Default apps report needs to be understood to avoid in the future.
It's just I'm slowed because of moving the office, otherwise this would be quicker.
Will have more info tomorrow, thanks for your patience.

I added .NET 3.5 by going to the Updates tab on the left, then clicking "Add" => "Template" => ".NET Framework 3.5".

Is that not the right way to do it?

Yes it is, if CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9 is the loaded image, and that preset's .NET wasn't added on the older image.
Please reread my reply above, from the "If my Google-fu is not mistaken, "CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9" is 1709?"
Maybe that ISO name is used for any current Windows, not just 1709.

I understood. My intent with that reply was to say that I was only using the 1803 ISO and nothing else. So no, I did not use the 1709 .NET files. :)

Ok, problem reappeared on a new 1809 LTSC image
If you have an exact preset demonstrating it, let me have at it.
Careful about service disabling, and make sure that whatever you do other than the preset is written in the reply, otherwise I might miss the replication.

Thanks for checking in on this!

Fortunately, this time it was another program I included in the install. :)
