W10 VM - "Windows could not update the computers boot configuration."

So I disabled a whole bunch of things using NTLite and it makes it so W10 won't finish right at the end of installation. I tried to make it as minimal as possible, so that might be why. But I did Google and found multiple posts of people having the same problem, but at no point did any of those people ever respond if their problem was fixed or what fixed it. I attached the file with the settings in case anyone asks for it. Only reason I am trying to get this to work, despite it apparently being a huge pain, is due to a old tablet being incompatible with x64, so I can't use W11. Thanks for any recommendations.

Normally, this error is caused by mismatched MBR or UEFI settings.

Your preset doesn't have a pre-defined disk layout, so the other possibilities are:
- Wrong "helper" settings in the VM, that are intended to automate ISO installs (uncheck them)
- Setup has located another disk and is trying to apply boot data to the wrong drive.

So the weird thing about that, I only have the one virtual disk set in the VM, unless it is detected the virtual disk drive for mounting the image. And I unchecked the "unattended installation". Is Windows10 just often weird with VMs?

The only difference between physical machines and VM's is the lack of OEM product keys in the "BIOS". Current versions of VMware & VirtualBox now have TPM emulation, which was the previous barrier.

What I would try is boot off the ISO, stop at the first Setup screen, and enter Shift-F10 to open a CMD window.
Code:
diskpart
select disk 0
clean
convert gpt
exit
exit

Now continue with the install.

Still gave the same error right before it is supposed to show the "rebooting in 10 seconds". But if that is all that's left to try I could probably find a old laptop to test the image on

That's a bcdstore issue, it's trying to update the boot info so the planned restart boots back into the new install. For a sanity check, I would try installing from a clean Windows ISO and see if your PC fails in the same location.

Yeah if I use a normal untouched W10 ISO it works fine in Oracle VM, same settings for both

Weird. Load the clean ISO, reapply your preset and make a new image again. NTLite doesn't do anything to touch boot info.

I've been trying to figure this out for about 30min, but how do I apply the preset? I deleted everything in NTLite, unloaded all the ISOs and whatnot, started clean with loading W10. Imported the preset that I uploaded above. But after I made the ISO I am pretty sure it was a normal W10 install.

1. Load the clean image.
2. From the Preset pane on the right, double-click on the preset if it's listed there.
3. If the preset isn't there, Preset / Import the XML file, and then double-click on it after it gets displayed.
4. From the Apply screen, start processing.

That worked, that is what I did previously too. But the weird thing is, it still has Microsoft Store, office, solitaire, and all these other apps that I thought would be gone if I disabled basically everything. But maybe they aren't removable with NTLite and W10? On Windows 11, I was able to remove basically everything and it was obvious because the start menu was empty. Maybe W10 is just different

If your target PC (Dell, HP, or Lenovo) has an OEM license key, we need to create an EI.cfg if you want to install a different version of Windows than matches the factory license.

Open a CMD window as Administrator, and use Notepad to write a new file sources\EI.cfg in NTLite's mounted Windows folder.

Gave it a try and it seemed to have the same result. It is a Alienware laptop that ships with W11, but I was using the Windows on a VM. But regardless, W10 is just going on one old tablet and I will just make other changes necessary myself. I do greatly appreciate all the info and recommendations, thank you.
