What exactly does this mean? "Until Remove Returns is ran"

I have noticed some nasty trouble this week with my test version of 1903 - where I would apply one of the recent cum updates and suddenly the Start Button and Search no longer do anything when clicked.

I traced the issue back to NT Lite and this item from the previous build seemed to be the issue:

"Components-1903: ‘Mixed Reality’ removal breaking taskbar after cumulative update install, until Remove Returns is ran "

I do remove Mixed Reality as a rule - but exactly what the heck does "Remove Returns" mean?

And does NT Lite actually still work?

Can I remove Mixed Reality now or not - the update notes are very cryptic and give no indicator if this is fixed, broken or what.

Thanks

Sonic.

Hi,

since 1903 cumulative updates will return whatever is updated, thus the tool "Remove Reinstalls" (returns->reinstalls), more info here.

You can right-click C:\Windows and start it, or start ntlite /cleancu for one action cleanup.

Plan is to automate that after Windows build change, or MS will fix/change that behavior since they have a lot of issues because of it. People are reporting inability to install updates after cleaning update cache with DISM etc., which all ties to the same.

Thanks - however - the documentation still remains confusing. Exactly when would I run this? In my case - I use NT Lite to build a "clean" install ISO every 3 months or so - which involves creating a fresh file share from an official MS ISO and then applying specific a (Saved) NT Lite Source config against it.

I still do not understand what this tool does or when I would run it. Do I run it against a file set I built a few months ago or what?

Appreciate a bit more detail on the tool. "since 1903 cumulative updates will return whatever is updated" - this is not clear - Return what? From where?

Cheers!

Sonic.

Run Remove Returns after installing cumulative updates, once logged back on to the desktop after it reboots.
If you're not using Windows Update to install updates on top of a lite OS, then you never need this step.

Cumulative update 1903 will reinstall updated pieces of components, even if removed prior. Microsoft made it forcefully reinstall any updated bit.
I'll work on automating the cleanup on reboot if they don't change that soon. I see they have plenty of issues reported by people using DISM official update cleanups.

Hi Sonic, do you fix that ? or have a workaround ? or more details ?
Fix what, the Mixed Reality bug? It was fixed in the latest versions.
If you are not making new images with it, but got stuck with the old one then either host-refresh to the new ISO version or run remove returns after the taskbar is stuck.

Do you know if WU has issues installing a following CU after using the Remove Reinstalls feature after installing a CU?

Try copying the windows\system32\VirtualMonitorManager.dll from the full ISO of the same version.
Reboot or reset explorer.

If that doesn't help, then you have something unknown, I would like to see that preset which prepared those Windows.

Thanks.
