I am new to windows 8.1 and using an iso that includes November 2014 update roll up.
I need to install .net3.5. Enabling it in Features on a running system it downloads the file, where is it downloaded to, Software Distribution, and what type of file is it, an executable, cab file or other?
I need to update the image, do i need a Servicing Stack and the latest CU only or do i need to add all the updates in the updates downloader tool.
What would be the install order on a running system, install .net 3.5 then the SS and CU as per usual?

I am using this post as a temporary location for 8.1 related uploads. Before running any file check them through as they may disable things you need to use, i run them as they are but users can cherry pick bits that suit them.

W7 aero on a8 7600 and a10 7890k constantly crashed leaving me with that bloody awful basic blue theme.
AMD did have usb3 drivers for the a88x chipset(fm2+). All i need for 8.1 on a88x is iov(iommu) and latest smbus inf(null driver), i use the native ms ahci driver which works fine. :) Considering Ryzen 3 2300x(oem tray only , rare as dodo dung) and Gigabyte bundle.

I have to run CoreParking (or whatever it's called - I mentioned it in a previous post here) to kee two cores unparked so that PowerDirector 15's GUI doesn't stutter when I'm editing video.

Park Control(bitsum)? You can stop core parking by going into Power Options, change plan setting, processor minimum frequency, its usually set to 5%, change it to 100. All 3 of my bulldozr based cpus, 1 pure cpu and 2 apus all throttle cores 3 and 4, use amd overdrive, toggle the multiplier down by 1, so 31 to 30, click apply, then back to the standard multiplier, that stops them throttling. Settings, use make default and set to remember last used settings at startup. AMD-OverDrive-4.3.2.0703 can be found at amd or at least it used to, if not i'll upload it it. :)

Looks good, well laid out, wonder if i can harvest changes with it, If all they are are registry changes, dont want yet another program running to make windows behave. Cant harvest registry changes, drat.

Damn amd yet again, Ryzen Master only works on windows 10. You are being forced to use windows 10 from every angle and using every possible excuse.:mad::mad:

Resolve only runs on the 10 version of Windows. Pinnacle's Video Studio needs Win10 if you want h.265 support.

But even if nuhi had NTLite working perfectly for Win10 removals, Microsoft keeps botching patches. Who wants an OS that eats your homework?

Its a real sorry state of affairs because we now have the cheapest most powerful hardware ever and its being saddled with the worst bug ridden os i can remember. I might just put another FM2+ system together that wont break the bank, it will do what i need it to and will run xp. XP cant format or trim an ssd but it runs well on it.

So, in the 2nd thread, ppl are saying that one can use Win10 drivers on Win8.1.

I haven't tried it. But looking at AMD's driver files, I see things like rcbottom, rctop. I have no idea what those are - but they seem specific to Win10.

Ive tried the latest(over a few months) cvhipset driver installers and they dont work on 8.1, you have to install the drivers manually. 8.1 has native usb3/3.1 drivers so we can forget them, the amd sata/ide/ahci works, smbus inf(null), iommv(if enabled in the bios).

I usually have 3 usb drivers install on w7 on fm2+, usb host, usb hub and usb filter along with the above, 8.1 having those leaves the 3 above amd everythings working fine here. I only recently found the ahci driver and before i was using the ms ahci and it worked fine. Ive seen a dell intel laptop running w7 and ms ahci from the factory. 8.1 is hit and miss on amd and intel but its worth a try at least. I will go fully intel if it means i can ignore 10 for as long as possible. Nvidia is still issuing new 8.1 drivers for my gt710. Ive heard people say you may have to mod drivers to work but thats beyond me.

The only downside to 8.1 so far is slow program startups. I disable prefetch and superfetch(which should be disabled by default for an ssd), use a winaero tweak but things still start slow. I went back to 7 for a couple of days, using basic and classic themes put me off, back to 8.1.

Arch(i think he says arch in another video) Linux but he still uses windows on occasion. He knows more than me and gives a very reasoned argument for not using windows 10.

I would go to Linux in a heartbeat except that 1) it's still not easy to use. (I was trying to find the largest file in a linux partition the other day. Even tho someone made a SpaceMonger-like graphical app, you still need to know what directory to point the app to to see drives. So is that /dev or /mnt? Or ...?) 2) my productivity software (mainly WordPerfect and Cyberlink PD 15) don't work with it. Resolve works in Linux - but it has to be a certain Linux and there's a whole thread in their forum about what you have to do to get Resolve working in Linux. I don't know if LibreOffice works in Linux - but I have 30 years of WP documents that have to import perfectly in to whatever alternative Word Processor I use. And so far, none of the Processors do that.

Speech Recognition too. I've never heard of a Linix equivqlent of Dragon.

So It's gonna be Win7/8 for me until the end. No problem as long as my current CPU doesn't fail.

I could use linux for web browsing only(at a stretch) but not much else. You are more likely to have your board or ram crap out before the cpu. There is still fm2/+ and am3/+ stuff floating around here, its just getting harder to find. Something is telling me to get more fm2+ stuff because it works fine for me n what i do, i dunno what to do to be honest. I can put an fm2+ system together for less than 200 quid, cpu board ram and gpu card, will see what january and the CES show brings.

Ive been watching a few yootoob videos about old hardware and a channel where the guy is putting togther a stereo system from old stuff on fleebay, ive had a couple of results from there myself and despite having a severe case of raging upgraditis there is that little voice that says fm2+ works for you so if it aint broke it there is nothing to fix. Then again i have been known todo more u-turns than a damn politician.

I had been tempted to upgrade to the Ryzen when it first came out - not because I need more power, just because.

I'm glad that I didn't. From what I read, none of the apps I use make use of the extra cores. (With the exception of NTLite.)

Even apps like Blender, which can use the extra power, tend not to since they're doing the heavy lifting on the GPU.

I have tried browsing in a Linux VM. It's okay, but too hard for me to figure out how to network it to my Host and to get it to print thru my Host.

I dont really need anymore than 4c/4t, 6c 6t and 8gb ram would give me a reasonable amount of overhead and with 8.1 working on coffee lake the i5 9600k(soldered) with turbo off looks suitable if a bit pricey. My current 4c 4t + 4gb ram gives me limitations and they are a good thing sometime.
Mebbe 9600k and 4gb then keep my 2 amd systems foe internet and faffing around with on w7, seeing as i have a barebone with networking preset.

This video proves your point and mine and he gives the best advice ever, get whats relevant for you. 16bit 44.1khz(or 48) audio converted to wav or aiff doesnt stress any pc and i get smoother renders when i set the program to a single core.

WordPerfect is damn pricey  I wouldnt even want to think about converting 30 years worth of stuff to another format.

You can tryLinux variants live in virtual box (Linux Mint and Zorin OS for a start), Libre Office is installed by default in some Linux ISOs and in others, offered/recommended/suggested.

Not sure if Play On Linux and/or Wine support WP but you could use a VM in VB for WP when the Windows time ends.

As much as I hate letting Microsoft have a peak at my computer, I decided to see what Windows Update would offer on my new, relatively fresh, Win8.1 Pro, made with NTLite, pre-updated with most of nuhi's list. I had also updated it after install with WSUS Offline Updater's Security Only patches.

I'm pleased to report that the only items I "needed" were an AMD SMBus driver, two printer drivers and something for one of my monitors.

The rest were useless offerings.

Some were for problems with the Surface. But I have a desktop.

Similarly, one was for touch screen problems. But again, I have a desktop.

One was for Journal stuff, even tho Microsoft removed Journal stuff in a later KB.

So I guess Microsoft isn't sniffing as much as I had expected to see what one has.

Interestingly, Update also offered me a cummulative update for IE11, even tho I removed IE11 using Windows' Features.

I didn't accept it, but am not sure if I shouldn't. I know from the old days of WinNT and XP, that IE was tightly integrated into the OS, and updating IE6 would often bring subtle improvements to the Desktop UI. So even though one might have "removed" IE, roots of it are still in the OS.

For now, unless someone gives me a good reason to do it, I'm not going to accept that cumulative update.

(Of course there were also the monthly rollups. But I don't do those.)

P.S. The KB for IE11 (KB4483187) says that it fixes a java script error to prevent remote code execution.
Again, since I have "removed" IE11, it's hard to see how I could be affected by a malformed java script.
(It's my understanding that java script is run in the browser. Not in the OS.)
