I am new to windows 8.1 and using an iso that includes November 2014 update roll up.
I need to install .net3.5. Enabling it in Features on a running system it downloads the file, where is it downloaded to, Software Distribution, and what type of file is it, an executable, cab file or other?
I need to update the image, do i need a Servicing Stack and the latest CU only or do i need to add all the updates in the updates downloader tool.
What would be the install order on a running system, install .net 3.5 then the SS and CU as per usual?
==================================================================

I am using this post as a temporary location for 8.1 related uploads. Before running any file check them through as they may disable things you need to use, i run them as they are but users can cherry pick bits that suit them.

I noticed something yesterday, windows 8.1 has no windows backup? The service exists but NTLite does not detect the component. In Windows 7 and 10 this is detected.

Whats the service called? I cant find backup on 8.1 EI Pro.

Block Level Backup Engine Service (wbengine)

Another component that is not detected is Storage Spaces. This one I'm sure is in the control panel.

The name of the service is: Microsoft Storage Spaces SMP (smphost)

I got wbengine service. According to the web backup is under Control Panel - System and Security but all i got is system, using U3 iso.
I got Storage Spaces in Control Panel and Services. Ping nuhi, see what he says :)

It seems that backup comes disabled in 8.1. Storage Spaces not:

Control Panel:

There is a service for disabled functionality, Microsoft's way of doing things o_O

Keep in mind that "Legacy" Windows Backup Services (Meaning anything that is not File History) fail if "Workstation" Service is not set to Automatic. Took me a while to figure that one, as I was disabling that because I do not use SMB.

I need to create a windows 8.1 pro 32 bit installation as small as possible in both size of the iso (700mb) and also in installation (5 / 6GB) this is possible I have seen some very good stable and fast but only in English that is why I am interested in creating my own in Spanish, I have done some tests and they always give me error , I only have a PC of limited resources that takes a long time so it is difficult to carry out test after test

Windows Update gets blocked on 8.1 later updates on intel 8th gen I3 8300/B360 chipset, you run an msu and it fails but if you extract the update.cab and try to install by dism will it work? Would it be the same with w7 too?

abbodi86 weird, installed 2 w7 2019 cab updates with dism, both failed. tried with the msu's, both failed. ran the zeffy wotsit, restarted and both msu's installed.

the cmd window gave me error code(s) but i didnt save the code , i was on a mission to get it installed. can replicate with a new install and i will post thhe codes. if i remember correctly from installing the msu's it was the last 3 updates that had a problem.

Back in the saddle with 8.1, running on 8/9th gen Coffee Lake/Refresh, aiming for these numbers or better.

Ignore EI Pro, go for regular Pro and rip the apps out, it has less Embedded packages in too.
Dont really like esoteric versions, go for the mainstream versions and get busy.

garlin I found the answer to a question i had in my mind, Audit mode will always boot back into audit mode after a restart.
Found an Unlocker alternative for the capture errors, "file in use" in winsxs files on the capture partition, no more sysprep or capture errors.

Exit from Audit mode with sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize
Rebooting several times in Audit can be expected (installing drivers, package needs restart), since you want to capture a "rested" image.

I knew about audit mode all along, just didnt know, and see how it would always restart back into itself.
Got to recheck my update list for this regular Pro iso now :(. Havnt had any problems with stuff complaining that ei pro isnt a proper pro but i would rather use the regular pro incase. Apps vs no apps isnt a problem.
