I am new to windows 8.1 and using an iso that includes November 2014 update roll up.
I need to install .net3.5. Enabling it in Features on a running system it downloads the file, where is it downloaded to, Software Distribution, and what type of file is it, an executable, cab file or other?
I need to update the image, do i need a Servicing Stack and the latest CU only or do i need to add all the updates in the updates downloader tool.
What would be the install order on a running system, install .net 3.5 then the SS and CU as per usual?
==================================================================

I am using this post as a temporary location for 8.1 related uploads. Before running any file check them through as they may disable things you need to use, i run them as they are but users can cherry pick bits that suit them.

Ok, so I found something odd: Remember that post last page I made a step by step comparisson of windows images?

Well, turns out I forgot to delete the Secure boot update from my image and 'pure' updated windows wasn't installing.

But that's the normal part.

The weird part is that when I redid the update run of NT, I forgot to mark Dism cleanup, the I did another pass just to do that.

The difference is brutal:

Previous Attempt (Integrate and cleanup in a single run):
index.php

With separate runs to integrate and cleanup:
Sem título-1.png

(Please don't mind the broken theme, that was me going a bit too wild with the delete key XD)

Either way, I'm going to redo the experiment again tomorrow, but is this 'normal' DISM behavior or some other trick I simply didn't knew about?

Edit: Did it again, result is the same. From now on, do integration in one run, then dism cleanup on another. Images will be smaller as a result.

Also, word of advice: If you're into a recent laptop (5th+ gen of intel) KEEP Group Policy Editor or the thing will not be able to shutdown. Thermal Framework will also give lots of errors making the device run much hotter than it should.

I also found to leave some services enabled at the installation, like Windows search, and manually disable them later. Modern control panel gives me grief ortherwise.

Windows search is absolute dog droppings anyway. Everything is miles better, i put it into every install using $OEM$ folder.

yes but it's one of the lowest bricks on the pile of 'crap' that it is windows. Remove it, and the whole thing might fall on your head. Case in point, I can't access Modern Control Panel (Or however the app is called in English)

Modern Control Panel - they tried to polish a turd. What was wrong with the old stylee control panel eh? Use loads of shortcuts instead or have it as a menu in Classic Control Panel(Open Shell).
Or however the app is called in English - Bloody Awful is what i call it in english.

Its sad =( Its my friends PC and he didnt like windows 10 and have less fps then me, we tweaked and tweaked w10 we jus got it much faster but not more or stable FPS

Read post no3 by Pokeyoats. quote "I pretty much use the disable cores 0 and 1 methodology for most games and there is almost always (I guess except for Vulcan) an impressive increase in performance." And this one for good measure.

Theres gotta be something in that core methodolgy aswell as disabling HT, im hearing(reading) it quite a lot.

2 new tweaks added to post no1.
Disable Windows Defender, services, tasks, remove icon from control panel. Use Power Run, file needs elevated permissions.
Delete Windows Mail logon entry(check with Autoruns).

I want to disable (IE11)msfeedssync.exe Feeds and task, do we have this tweak in the tool or a group policy setting? or a removal? or a service.
Which part of IE is it in?

nuhi, could you add either a tweak or removal? :)

My personal full 8.1 build will be ready by next week.
Stage 1, I will be using an untouched iso, installed, tweaked, updated, sysprepped and captured.
Stage 2, Image put into NTLite for shrink and cleanup.
Cmd files will also be laid out in .txt file with explanations so beginners can see what each command does.

Some 3rd party files will be used either in part or full, credits where due. :)

Dark Theme for Windows 8.1 U3 required. Not dark as totally black, more like the old Technics hifi house colour, somewhere between black and brown.
Or black to grey.

New tweak pack added to post no1. Pack 1c includes NTLite W8.1-Lite-v1 preset.

There are over 40 reg files in the first pack, ive converted bats to reggies where i can.
There are hklm and hkcr that can go into an install/image. Some are hkcu which are best done per user. Some are hklm and hkcu and ive split them into hklm and hkcu's. Some are options in NTLite in various places already.

Pack file list.

ultraform I am gonna be changing the tweak pack in the next few weeks to commands in the SetupComplete file and bat/cmd files only for post setup/1st logon because i get greater control than reggies and its easier for me.

I havnt used oobe.cmd because the tool creates setupcomplete and i use that for a few things and they work well. :)

Been fiddling with 8.1 on the i3 8300/B360. On my Steamroller system i have been running 8.1 using the standard ms display driver for the GT710, no gaming/netflix etc. WMP video playback is icky, VLC not too bad and and Firefox video is acceptable for yoopoop.

The i3 is just using the igpu/ms driver for the time being, there isnt an official igpu driver for 8.1, w10 and build 1703 upwards only(think its 1703, might be 09). If you only need a cheap low end machine for basic internet stuff, or for a music pc for foorbar or itunes then the basic ms driver will do and you wont have to worry about an intel igpu driver. GRab any cpu up to an i3(with igpu), a cheap b360(H310 may work but i dont have one) and a cheap crucial bx 500 ssd, its easy to silence telemetry and windows update will be blocked, by ms themselves, stuff w10 :p:D

If you have a laptop that came with 8.1 then you're laughing. If you are looking for one most will have had 8.1 wiped and now have 10 on them, find one, search on the makers site what it came with.

8.1 is proving to be a great os, old hardware, new hardware. :)

Ive been fiddling around with cpu tweakers, disabling core parking, turbo boost(8300 doesnt have it) and cpu throttling on the i3, i want all four cores running at its base clock, 3.7ghz.
Changed a few bios settings and hwinfo reports all four cores at 3.7, just under, 3.6xxghz, prolly due to the base clock just under 100mhz and 3 cores at 24c and one at 25c using the standard intel cooler. Mild tweaks, services and scheduled tasks. Left machine running/idling for over 3 hours, no core parking or cpu throttling, sweet :)

W8.1 should install on Ryzen 1xxx/2xxx/3xxx because it has its own usb3/3.1 drivers.
I use OverDrive to stop any cpu throttling and turbo boost on my AMD Steamroller's so i would use RYzen Master on Ryzens but it wont run on 8.1, ive tried. The cpu throttling is quite agressive on Steamroller, cores 3 and 4 throttle down to 1.7ghz on a 4.0ghx 880K

If you want to run 8.1 on Ryzen try fiddling with the bios settings as i have on the core i3. :)

Hi
I use windows 8.1 again.
I share my starting preset.
Only Keyboard and Language Components removed in this preset

Services : Base Filtering Engine
I still have this default, its seems need by my Avast VPN.

Microsoft.NET Framework 4.7.2 is needed by Microsoft MouseKeyboardCenter 11.1 to change seetings on mice on win 8.1 =)

If i find more settings to optimize SSD/hardrive and more tweaks, then I update my preset. =)
I gonna try to have all my tweaks and settings in the preset that i use on Pc.

I use my Pc for Games like Steam/Ubisoft/ Blizzard Overwatch
Avast VPN, Discord,Teamspeak, Media Player Classic, Foobar. Chrome, Firefox, Torrents.
This stuff work with my preset =)
