Thanks. It seems that this wasn't the answer. I can't login into windows at all now, but I am connected to the store, onedrive and office. My guess is that MS used to telemetry to let me in before. It isn't really a problem, the computer is running well right now and I'm happy with my build...

I have now disabled defender through NT Lite and run Avira. The free version of Avira will run the virus checker alongside windows firewall (if you want Avira's firewall you need to pay). This seems like a lighter and easier option.

This wasn't the answer. The RPC service is running, but I am still having the fault. It does eventually resolve by itself, but I don't know why.

I removed this component and Defender is running at a very minimalist level now. I installed the free Avira and it ran as the virus checker and it indicated that it was running alongside windows firewall. What was most notable was that the stupid antimalware windows process was no longer running...

That's all that is required? I am tempted by a 3rd party AV rather than Defender, tbh.

The notes for RPC locator state that it is required for backwards compatibility and it is marked green.

I might have fixed this. If you go into services and find 'Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant' you will see that it is set to Manual (Trigger Start). If you simply start this service then you can log on.
