Following up from this thread, I've found the solution for VNware Shared Folders disappearing. It requires the "Multiple UNC Provider" component, just like VirtualBox.
Thus, at the end of the notes, it should say: "Needed for VirtualBox Guest additons, s well as VMware Shared Folders." or similar.
So, instead of where "Mutple UNC Provider" currently is (under "SMB v2 - Client), it should be directly under "File sharing support", like so:
This obviosuly is a very heavily lited config, but it gets the point across.
Removing said component on a live VM install in Vmware results in the Shared Folders link on the desktop disappearing and the error as linked above.
