Question about renewing

I bought a home license a little over a year ago and just renewed not too long ago. After initially buying the license I activated online to use up 1 of my 5 activations. Now when I renewed I had to use another online activation with new code which brings me to 3 activations left, same machine btw. Did I do it right? At this rate after 3 more renewals I'll have none left assuming I have the same machine in 3 years.

If you have some kind of hardware attached (via USB?) like and external SSD/ HDD when you activated first time and it was removed when you open NTL again, NTL will asume you have new hardware and have to activate again as you only can activate on 5 different hardware settings.
I experienced this as i've a SSD like USB stick (Corsair GTX) and started NTL without it attached one time and NTL want me to use another online activation again.

My hardware didn't change. Is it normal that renewing needs an online activation? Can nuhi answer this please?

Sorry for the delay, feel free to ask me directly over email when it comes to licensing.

Renewals disable the current license and replace it as the only one needed going forward. In doing so they spend one of their activations (out of 5).
Also if you don't have an existing license activated, the one which would be renewed, it needs to be activated first.

On any sign of trouble or confusion, fastest is to contact support at ntlite com.
