Check the support page, there is official documentation on what are the tool's options and a few guides linked.

It's not trial and error, unless you want it to be. Meaning remove what you know is unnecessary for your scenarios.
If you see any unexpected issues, report it with a preset used to debug.
But you probably wonder about the absolute minimum size, for that it's much more likely some of your apps won't work if all removed.

Having said that it's not trial and error, it reality it can be trial and error in the sense that you remove something believing that it's unnecessary, try it, only to find a corner case where it IS necessary (that is, creates an error) in your situation.
