Temp and Scratch Folder locations

I'm trying to use NTLite to reduce the footprint for a Win 10 install on a laptop with 16GB SSD. Prior to installing NTLite, I tried to free up as much space as I can using windows tools, but still only have about 7GB or so of free space. There's no programs installed, just Windows.

When I try to load the source files in NTLite, I get an error that the Temp and Scratch folder locations (on my 16GB system disk) don't have enough free space (10000M required), and that I should change their locations at "File - Settings".

Since its a laptop, I only have the one small SSD and can't add another disk, so my only option is to use a removable device (USB Flash, SD, etc). Changing the location to one of those however, returns the error message, "Cannot mount with this temporary location, please change it at File -Settings."

Are there any settings that would allow me to use removable storage for Temp and Scratch? Without doing so, I think I may be out of luck.

Thanks for any insights

are you running in Free or Licensed mode? Using removable drives isnt recommended because of the low read and write speeds, 20mbs or below for usb keys sd cards etc. If you have usb3 and a highwrite/read speed drive then you could give it a try. If you dont have usb3, then i suggest you do a live install shrink which is only availible if you run in licensed mode, you cant do it in free mode. If you can do a live install shrink then i suggest you image the drive 1st with acronis or similar incase of problems, then you can reload the image.

I cant check this right now, but i think the setting is the settins.xml file in the ntlite program folder. - CustomScratch>false</CustomScratch, change false to true and save then open ntlite.

Hi Mark,
maybe try creating a VHD (virtual disk) on that USB, and then mount it in Disk Management like a real disk.

To gain some space i would disable the following, System Restore(and delete any restore points), Pagefile(only if you have 4gb as the minimum), Sleep and Hibernation. Set Recycle Bin to zero. Clean out Software Distribution - X:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution - this is where windows keeps updates.

Pagefile - I run with 4gb ram with 128mb being used for the apu graphics on w7 x64 and w10 x64 and both OS work fine when NTLiting an image. If you have less than 4gb installed, i suggest you experiment 1st.

That lot should gain some usable space because your 16gb ssd is only 14.5gb usable once formatted.
