Clangers Presets - Closed

Sorry if its not the right forum. But I want to know if all this stripping down brings down the RAM usage as well? I have an old laptop with W7 x32 and 3GB RAM. Its doable but not a good experience while browsing the web in Chrome (with 5-6 must-needed extensions) anytime I go over 7-9 tabs. With script-heavy sites its even worse. After bootup about 900-950MB is used up (after closing Kaspersky). I have a 1GB pagefile( going with a larger one did not seem to make any difference). I am looking to build a new system next year. so until then... I even tried Linux but so much stuff still needs Terminal commands that I gave up.

Using a lite preset like stage1 and stage2 doesnt bring the ram usage down by much because they are lite. Windows 7 64bit is quite tolerant of only having 4gb ram with 128mb for the apu graphics and no pagefile. However 3gb on 32bit is going to be very tight once you have browser addons and security stuff running. I suggest you find out if your laptop can use 4gb ram and consider upgrading it if funds allow. You would only see 3.3gb usable with 4gb with a 32bit os. If your laptop has 64bit drivers availible and can have 4gb or more i would upgrade to 4gb ram and use 7 64bit.

I have a w7 barebone with networking preset that may suit your needs but its an older preset and you may have to tweak it. I think some people may have used it on laptops.

Hi Clanger! I've tried the W10 stage2-v3 preset you shared, and I noticed that the install isn't as small as the W10 stage2-finished you made before. What's the difference between the two?

I cant directly compare both presets at the moment and i cant remember whats in them. If i think that component X may cause issues i will keep in later versions so hopefully users will have less prblems and can run them with either little or no modifying. I had to compromise between install size and usability, hopefully i acheived a good balance. :)

@arenaboy007, Stage1 presets for any os use the same methodology i have been(and still do) using with xp(with nlite) for years. You are getting a lot of experience with stage1.

Hi clanger, im using lite preset + win 7 64 dec 2017 for a diskless image, overall it does increase responsiveness and perforamance. But im getting this error lately, cant figure out why.. any idea which setting is related to this?

@denywinarto, I think it is a windows issue not related to to the preset removals because if it was then it would have happened from day 1 and you would have reported it then, have you added an updates since then? Is it caused by a program or just windows explorer?

Hopefully Kasual will be able to help as i am going to be away and busy for the next 8 weeks. :)

When that popup is coming out?
Are running programs or a specific program?
Do you try to do anything with Windows explorer when that popup come out?

The files seems to be damaged:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\sqmapi.dll
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\en-US\usbhub.sys.mui

But only C:\Windows\system32\drivers\en-US\usbhub.sys.mui that the hash does not match the actual file.

Have you had any problem with IE/USB?

Hi @Kasual, I have been making some test with this, when I make the iso image using the two lasted NTLite version this "sqmapi.dll" error comes up, the file is not missing but some applications says: "The program can´t start because sqmapi.dll is missing from your computer..."
But, i found an old NTLite version (1.3.1.5060), installed it and make the iso image using this (old) version and this error does not happen, so I think we are facing a bug in the newest version of NTLite.
I made this test because, after reading the whole thread, it seems that this error is happening when IE is removed, so I remembered that I have successfully removed IE before without having this "sqmapi.dll" error, after searching these old version in my downloaded files I installed and I was right this error does not happen, I don´t know in which version (after 5060) this bug began, I tried the last two version and the bug is there. Hope @nuhi can fix this!
thanks in advance for your help !

Have you tried to keep \Internet Explorer\sqmapi.dll ?

You can add it to the files protection in the righ side panel of 'Compatibility' when you click on 'Compatibility' (available when Components page is active).
After build 5060, NTLite uses a new engine with more removals.

@nuhi can protect that file if that's all needed to fix that bug.

Hi, and yes, I´ve tried that, the file is not removed, the file also has the correct size... after install I tried to register but no luck, impossible to register, I don´t have the error messages when I try to register its something about "server" problem...

@fsalazar, if you found a repeatable issue please open a new topic with the preset demonstrating the issue attached. Using the clean ISO first, to simplify things.

Thanks.

Add these components to your list:
Tape.- as old tapes used before the floppies
Transfer cable.- uncommon USB cable to transfer files pc to pc (p2p).

Keep Windows error reporting but disable it, is needed for Diagnostic and troubleshooting.

Windows Error reporting could be better as diagnostics' parent because it can't scan for issues (tested in networking error some time ago).

Keep but disable the windows error reporting service? I will keep it but i wont disable it. Every user has their own set of tweaks they apply. I will add a registry file to disable it. Users have a choice then.

Only 1 user in a thousand may use Tape and Transfer Cable but i will keep them. Advanced users will know where to find those drivers but newbies wont. I keep all ms drivers and let users remove them if they want to. :)

Lemmy know if if you think anything else needs looking at, i am always happy to tweak a preset if a user has an issue somewhere. Gotta keep my presets user friendly. ;)

Edit - Done. Preset updated and error reporting service disable reg file added to reg file pack. :)

Just had a look at a belkin usb transfer cable, handy to have at £4, cheers. :)

I did 2 presets while testing, removed all 3rd party drivers from both. I set one to keep all ms drivers then the other to host hardware only. The host hardware one was only 218mb smaller. I prefer to have one iso you can use on any machine and 218mb is a small price to pay for convinience. I can always quickly tweak them post install depending on the machine and its purpose. :)

I dare to say 1 in 1 million (or less) would use transfer cable (have't seen it available in my country with +120 million people, saying a third use computers), the same as tape (anyone have seen computers with taped instead of USB?), doesn't makes sense to keep drivers for uncommon hardware and remove for some more common hardware, as amd_sata (mass storage).

Adding a reg file to disable Windows error reporting to the lite preset would make sense if it is not removed.

Had you updated the lite preset too?

Yep.kept error reporting and added the reg file. :) Did it not long after i saw your post. Only the 1 preset now, Lite. I was able to improve lite so advanced wasnt needed.

I will always keep all ms drivers in a public lite preset, i dont want beginners being stuffed by a missing ms driver. As i noted in #177 the difference between All MS Drivers vs Host Hardware Only is 218mb and that just isnt worth the aggravation, especially when an os now installs in gigabytes instead of megabytes. 3.7gb or 3.5gb? not worth the hassle and never will be.

W7-Lite-v4 has been uploaded. Remote Registry has now been kept due to a possible issue when updating.
