Well, something good seems to have changed. When I explicitly loaded the desired target WIM (which I hadn't done before), it ascended to the top and the Deployed images moved to the bottom. I'm about to try the updates again...

Well, the hash from the site you linked doesn't match, but that site's hash is for "x15-65805" rather than for the SP1-U Media Refresh ISO ("X17-59186"), which is the version MS recommended for download.

Yep, and everything looks/looked fine. But just in case, I set everything up on a drive with 2 TB free, and got the same error. By the way, someone reported this issue with Win 10, but I don't know if that's relevant in this case. See here
