19043.1021 Remove Reinstallation - Bluescreen

Hi Guys,

just a report and the Question if I'm alone with this error :).

I tried to install the .1021 Update (yes with new ssu before) on .985 but after a restart windows said the update couldnt applied and windows start making it undone.
That works well but after that the new edge and defender said "Hiii". So i opened Ntlite and started the remove reinstallation.
The next restart gave me a bluescreen.
Safemode and dism restorehealth etc. wont work.

Will reinstall later and made a few tests.
Maybe its cause of dism's /resetbase

Any other with the same abnormalitie?

Greetings

Hi,

while 1021 update does have all kinds of reports unrelated to this tool, and people are waiting on a fix in a form of 1022+, I am interested in this.
Please send me or attach a preset demonstrating this.

Thanks.

Hi Nuhi,

it sould be the same preset like here:

Will submit the actual preset later when Im home.

You' right.
Patch .1022 isnt far away.
I just thought this thread could be helpful for others who "playing" tests with their own computer ;).
Like i said...i think /resetbase could be the real culprit :).

Here are the actual presets

Thanks, regardless if resetbase was used, the BSOD is after removals, if OS worked before, it should after.

In the meantime just to make sure, you're using the latest 2.1.1 when trying that, not this old 2.0.0.7797?

Testing now.

I always use the newest version :).
.7917 is already installed.

Just a quick n dirty test:
Installed the strippted down Iso with the presets above.
Necessary drivers -> check -> install SSU fir .1021 update - check -> install 1021 - check
Update runs through without errors.
Removing reinstallations worked without errors too.
Now i try /resetbase

BUT
I forgot the 21h1 enabeling package bevor installing .1021.
Will do this test in ~ half an hour

Thanks for the info.

My test also went ok, it was a prepatched 19043.928, just for randomness sake, with your preset of course.
Then after (full, non-compatible) resetbase, forced .1021 CAB again directly with DISM, then again remove reinstalls, still works.

Probably goes without saying, make sure that last time there wasn't another preset missing, a mistery session.

Please report as soon as you manage to replicate it, regardless if Microsoft released a bad/preview update - I would like the tool to be maximally flexible.

Here too.
I don't know if there was another preset in which I changed a few things online after installation :/.

Enableing 21h1 at first makes no difference.
Installing went well resetbase too

Maybe /resetbase hast cleand up too much after the last official patch day...or before?!
Till .985 everything works well.

Thx for your help Nuhi. Will report if a find someting more this way.

Will waiting for .1022.

OK, keep me updated.
Also keep in mind if maybe 2 or more updates in sequence are necessary, or potentially an older version removal had an issue.
You know you can use Host Refresh method to bring that install to a fully working fresh state without reinstalling.

Thanks.

Before embarking on this test, here is the plan plus a few questions:

- use preset as it was with the updates in it from that time
- install that ISO
- update to the next month update (chronologically use previews as well)
- run resetbase, is it the normal (compatible) or the deeper one? Haven't checked if you also enable deep resetbase in settings.
- remove reinstalls, or first remove reinstalls then resetbase?
- then repeat for each month until it fails

Let me know to fill in the blanks above and then I start.

Thanks.

As spoken in PN, sorry for the delay ;).

I used the Testversion of you. Everything works.
Provocating with /resetbase didn't work. System is online :). 19043.1023

After an update I directly go to remove reinstall and than giving the machine a restart follows directly by
command "Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /resetbase"
Didn't do it with NTlite but will give it a try immediately.

And yes - than repeat till it fails including preview patches - but no .net preview packages

Thanks for the info.
Note that full resetbase is not officially supported, Microsoft uses Compatible method only and resetbase is disabled via a reg entry, and that's what I would recommend when starting fresh if one wants to avoid issues down the line. This is a Windows thing.

Regarding the tool, it would be nice to trigger the issue, irregardless how, just to see if something can be done so only normal Windows limitations remain.
Ping me if you manage to do it, and maybe it doesn't fail at all as remove reinstalls was improved in that pre-release version.
On your "real" machine, for long-term upgradability, use only the compatible method - as Resetbase in NTLite actually enables the tweak for it - it's disabled by default when ran only via scripts, option would be pointless without it.
Such tweak is also separate in the Settings page as well (search resetbase), so make sure to disable/default that in your preset and set to Compatible (or run manually a script without the relevant tweak) when cleaning, so we know it's not Windows.

that ResetBase tweak breaks sysprep on 1809 LTSC so i stopped using it. heck knows what else it breaks.
