Hey all,

I have quite the problem reinstalling operating systems, and as a result, I have iterated through quite a few Windows 7 presets using NTLite during the past year. The following preset is the most stable I know of so far. To use, of course, simply import this into NTLite on a Windows 7 image.

I suggest you use a Windows 7 image that has been updated through the simplix update pack.

In general, this preset tries to slim down Windows 7 as much as possible while still being able to update and without any bizarre issues in day to day use. My use case for my computer is some coding, games / discord, etc. Any errors I used to come across in previous presets appear to be gone now. I haven't bothered too much with making a Windows 10 preset quite yet.

Only two I know of are unable to be installed:

Likely because these components I remove in my preset. It is possible you may use them, I personally never have.

I also don't install a couple telemetry related updates. I'm unsure if they actually successfully install or not because I always just hide them:

How many updates can't be installed?

Your preset could be buggy in some scenarios

Honestly, I am unsure if I have answer to this question. What I typically will do is use Simplix to update a genuine Windows 7 image, which appears to have the following updates included when integrating (scroll down a little):

After this, I use Windows update and it finds stuff it thinks it needs to install (usually not many updates, off the top of my head there's a WMF update, the July 2016 rollup, and those listed above which I hide).

I am aware there are probably many, many hotfix updates (and potentially others) which are likely not included in the Simplix update pack (unless they're part of the cumulative ones) and certainly not shown when running Windows update. If you know of anything important that is potentially being missed by using Simplix and then going from there, let me know, because I'd love my image to be updated to the best possible state prior to running the NTLite preset.
 
I'm wondering how many updates are missing after slimming because i had win7 updated before slimming (no GWX, telemetry) and there are no missing updates but after slimming down, Windows updates shows updates missing related to some components removed and your preset is removing many components.

I don't use simplix update pack.

I see.

Unfortunately I haven't conducted any tests to verify what is and is not missing. Typically I will update a Windows 7 ISO with the latest Simplix pack (or in general, update the ISO by integrating updates) and then run my NTLite preset on the updated ISO. As a result, when running Windows update when the operating system is installed from the updated + NTLite modified ISO, very few updates show up (since most it thinks it needs is already installed).

I have not run this preset on a un-updated Windows 7 ISO, and I do not know what updates will or will not show up when running Windows update in this scenario. I recall in the past (although this has improved) that when running NTLite on an un-updated Windows 7 ISO, then trying to install all the updates on the installed system (around 200ish?), several would fail due to those components missing. I prefer now to integrate the updates into the ISO itself prior to running the preset.
