Can Windows Defender be safely removed without ill effect?

From what I've diligently researched, It seems that removing or completely disabling Win. Defender as it is now, is virtually impossible, since neither the creator, nor any higher-level experienced users have responded to any of the latest posts about it, including mine; I prematurely posted an incorrect answer to my own question recently, because it ended up not working for me.

Let me point-out that personally, I only wish to disable, NOT remove Win. Defender in Win. 10,, since removing IT, or any other component in my opinion, can be far too risky an option for a Win. 10 system that's now even more complex in it's inter-dependancies; I'm afraid that the days of safely & successfully using NTlite or other such tools as a "debloater" & ending up with a working Win. 10 installation, is long gone.

Let's hope that a solution for at least disabling it without having to install another anti-virus program will be forthcoming sooner than later, because at this time, nothing other than installing mbam (which will automatically disable it), will do the trick.

If you wanna rennable. just change the 4 back to a 2 and reboot

Since I finally had a successful NtLite Win. 10 1903 ISO made, I chose to go back & risk removing the win. defender component, then ran a newly created test Win. 10 ISO as a VM with no issues.

However, I noticed that in services.msc in the test running Win. 10 VM, it shows WD as running and automatic (& greyed out), even though both the component and security center are clearly gone, so was curious if this is the norm, or should I have tried to disable it under services during the session first, before I removed the component? It was greyed out under services during a subsequent session, so unsure if that would be the case regardless.

I'm a stickler for getting every single thing right, so am willing to go back and start all over again just to do this one tweak if necessary, & most importanly, if allowed.

Thanks.
