Unable to change default programs bug in 1.7.0.6522 & 1.7.0.6510

Hey nuhi,

I tried the release you made today (1.7.0.6522) and still ran into the same issue with being unable to change the default applications as I mentioned here.

I know you said you had problems replicating the error, but I was able to replicate it myself on separate hardware. These were the steps I followed:

1: Use Win10_1803_English_x64.iso (you can get this by using a non-MS computer or a non-MS user agent to access the Windows 10 download website. You also need to select "English" and "x64" options for the ISO)

2: Apply the included preset to the ISO

3: Burn the ISO using Rufus, and install

The resulting installation will have the same errors I documented previously.

I tried this again, on 1809.55, and no issue setting Firefox as the default browser.
Unless someone has a preset using the latest version that guarantees this failing, I must go to the next task.

Thanks.

So I'm not the only one who is unable to put Firefox as my Standard Browser (I'm using the 2019 LTSC). Hopefully reinstalling Windows will solve this problem though, not sure what caused it and why.

EDIT: Issue still stands, I'm going to install a non edited version now and check if this is NTLite related or Windows fault.

EDIT 2: Windows LTSC 2019 by itself caused no problems, I found the preset that ended up causing this problem for me this time (I added it in Online mode during testing, I didn't Online edit this when I got the problem the first time, so dont think it matters.).

Test my preset I put in the comment before this one, It causes it to be unable to put Firefox as my standard browser. If it doesnt for you, then something is really weird.

I'm getting this problem consistently with the latest version. nuhi, 1803 x64 English with this preset and the result is the same. I've never had this problem before. Will stick to stock Windows until this is fixed.

I wonder why nuhi can't reproduce this, if 3 users so far have reported the same issue.

LIINdd can you try this in 1809, with NTLite 1.7.0.6545? And could you upload screenshots too? (snipping tool is great for that)

I won't have time to look into this again until the weekend, but this is an important bug and nuhi can't fix it until he can replicate it, so if you have any more details LIINdd and MT_ that could help with replicating please share.

Just saying "I'm going to stick with stock windows until it's fixed" doesn't help because nuhi wants to fix it, but he can't until he can replicate it on his own computer and look at the error.

I can't really help him replicate it though, because it happens to me every time no matter the edition with the preset I sent. If it doesn't happen for nuhi, I have no idea why. I don't really do anything special for this to happen. The only thing I could see being different is that he does it to a VM (maybe?) and I do it to my main PC, or maybe that I use mixed language settings (English UI and Swedish Region/Keyboard settings).

Hopefully your preset will help him find the issue then. I also installed outside of a VM, but I didn't use mixed language settings.

I also recall disabling internet explorer in my preset, and nuhi did say that was probably related.

nuhi please let me know if you make any progress on this :)

Doesn't seem like it will be fixed anytime soon :(

Dont forget 1809 was released in a very poor state and was withdrawn when problems started appearing.
I would literally treat each major update as a new os because ms change stuff around, it may look the same on the surface but it isnt underneath.

Windows 8.1 is working on Ryzen cpu(no apu igpu driver) and Coffee Lake(no igpu driver).
LTSB/C doesnt get feature updates, isnt rammed with apps, has partial cortana.
8.1 doesnt get feature updates, is supported till 2023, its apps can easily be removed, has no cortana. NTLite can deal with 8.1 with ease because it dont change every 6 months, the base 10 is stable(in features terms), very stable when running. If you use or are considering LTSB/C then give 8.1 a go, unless there is a technical reason for running 8.1, someone did recently mention why they needed to run w10 but i forget why that was.

Even a midly tamed 8.1 is as good as LTSB/C and better in some respects.

Its not an answer to the problem and i know that but people need to know there was an operating system between windows 7 and 10, that it is as goood as 7 and better than 10 and 10 LTSB/C, that there will be some limitations with igpu drivers for intel and amd apu's, there may be technical reasons why someone may need to use 10 but for everyone else 8.1 is an excellent alternative and the more people who know that the better and ms may pull their corporate head out of their corporate fundamental and get back to making a desktop operating system that isnt solely aimed at social media junkies who value style over substance.

This isn't a Windows problem, it's a NTLite problem. Microsoft deserves a lot of crap for their Windows versions, but this problem here isn't one of them.

I tried Windows 8.1 for a split second, and it was so ugly that I'd rather have spyware than use 8.1 ever again. It's despicable to look at (in my opinion).

But again, this problem isn't because of Windows, so this doesnt really belong in this thread as it's a NTLite component removal going wrong (I'm guessing) in the later version of NTLite, which I know for a fact, because I never had this problem in previous versions.

nuhi, after a long day of testing by removing one component at a time, I've found the exact one that's causing this problem for me.

It's this one: internetexplorer 'Internet Explorer' that seems to be the bad guy for me.

But here comes the weird part, this seems to not be a issue that is caused with this component by itself, because when I tried only removing it on a clean ISO the problem didn't actually show up. So this issue is a weird one for sure.

I hope you can replicate this issue, but at this point I've given up hope.

From what I've been seeing so far, recent Windows 10 updates are affecting default programs. I did a clean install of Win10Pro 1803 (no NTLite) and I can set default on .ps1 files back and forth (powershell_ise and notepad). I then do a check for Windows updates and install all the ones that show up. After the requisite restart, if .ps1 was already set to powershell_ise and I change it to notepad, it will change to it. When I try to change back to powershell_ise, it stays with notepad. Did a quick Google and found these:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ive-type/6cd0c891-d7e2-4f23-aa03-3ba33e71f68a
https://techforluddites.com/windows-10-change-the-default-programs-for-opening-files/

Needless to say it made me sad and then angry and almost hateful of Microsoft; and realized this may be the path to the dark side? I digress.

Doesn't seem like there's a working workaround any longer. At least, outside of right-clicking on a .ps1 file and choosing 'Edit' every time.

I just feel like we're in this hybrid mode of Windows 10 and it's going to suck dealing with these types of issues as they crop up through updates until Microsoft is closer to the OS that they are envisioning long term (modern OS?). I can only imagine what nuhi will be dealing with through all of this...

How do I set the default web browser through the registry editor?

Literally everything works for me except this one issue.

How do I set the default web browser through the registry editor?
Maybe changing in the registry this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.htm\OpenWithList\notepad.exe (change the key name)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.htm\OpenWithProgids (change the value without data or with empty data)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.html\OpenWithProgids

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\http\shell\open\command (check the data and change it)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\https\shell\open\command
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\url\shell\open\command

From my experience this is really an issue when removing something related to Internet Explorer or Edge 32/64-bit stuff... I havent had an issue with this since I kept most of this in.
